The Xmas Music is Driving me Crazy

I’m sitting in the San Diego airport (yay, free wi-fi!) being tortured by Xmas music at high volume.

It’s not even Thanksgiving yet! How can I survive the next 1 1/2 hours? Help!

I’m a huge fan of Xmas music, but I agree it is way too soon. Two of our local stations have been playing it 24/7 for weeks now. Too soon! It stops being special if you do it too soon.

You think it’s bad in the States? I’m currently sitting in the lobby of a hotel in Tsurumi, Japan, near Yokohama. There is one of those giant inflatable Santa-in-a-chimney things, which inflates and deflates (popping Santa in and out of the chimney) every minute or so. There is also Christmas muzak playing on the speakers, although it is a nice, gentle, tinkly variety.

I admit, I kind of like it. I’ve been living in Bangkok, where the temperatures are in the 80’s, so having a touch of cool weather and holiday cheer is a bit of home, even if it is before Thanksgiving…

Yeah, one of my coworkers is already playing Christmas music on her MP3 or whatever it is thingie docking device. I work in a small field office and it’s hard to get away from it.

On the other hand, as I’ve gotten older I like Christmas more, so I guess it’s all good. But this girl’s nasty-ass Christmas Tree Sweatshirt needs to go!

We love Xmas music too, but HATE hearing it before Thanksgiving. In fact, I prefer to start hearing/playing it in December. It gets earlier each year. They play it quite awhile after Xmas too.

I agree,it isn’t as special with all the over playing.

I like Christmas music… at Christmas. This is friggin’ ridiculous. I’m tired of it already, and it’s sad.

The train I take to school started playing Christmas music … at the beginning of November. I actually love Christmas music if it’s the traditional, sung-by-a-choir kind, but they’re playing some truly horrendous rock and pop holiday tunes that sends all right-thinking people into a murderous rage. The music is played so loudly that I can’t get any reading or napping done on the train. The intervals when the music stops for the announcement of the next station are heaven.

Have you tried poking out your eardrums?

Just you wait. any moment now, it shall descend into all sorts of cutesy and voluble versions of “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth” and “Frosty the Snowman,” same as every year.

First all of the political campaign ads and now Christmas music!!

I guess one good thing about all of the political campaign ads was that it prevented Christmas music from being played just after July 4th!!

I put my iPod in my purse last week just so I could go shopping in peace. Hey, that sounds like a carol - “Sho-oop in heavenly Peace.” Christmas music is so overdone it grates like nothing else - every shop, every restaurant, everywhere for what, six freakin’ weeks?

I listen to talk radio in the car - no Christmas music.
I don’t watch much TV - Not much Christmas music.
When I shop on the 24th I’ll be in the mood.

This is one of the reasons we don’t stay home at Xmas anymore. I prefer the merry shouts of “Outta da way, ya fuckin’ moron!” on the streets of Greenwich Village to a carol, any day!

And yeah, rock-song carols can be kinda lame, but Twisted Sister does an awesome Oh Come, All Ye Faithful (warning- YouTube link with sound and some boobies near the end). Even my minister liked it- Dee Snyder has a very good voice under all that stupid hair and make up.

To be honest, it drives me nuts when it is played in any store right now, but my regional boss just called our store and said that we could only play Christmas tunes between now and the new year. Unfortunate for us employees, the only CD in the store with Christmas music was Elvis.

Nothing against the king, but serious - we are there 12-14 hours a day. It absolutely drives everyone nuts. We are stopping in at the store tomorrow and picking up some other music though. I enjoy the Merry Mixmas songs, where they are all remixed, as well as the Barenaked for the Holidays CD. Maybe more stores should invest in such things.
