The zero-tolerance dimwits score another perfect shot to the foot

Or maybe more would have been lost in a crossfire.

Maybe they have a really ambiguous law like in Pennsylvania where it’s a felony to carry a handgun on ‘primary or secondary’ school property unless you are an on-duty law enforcement officer or are carrying for ‘other legal purpose’. Nobody I know wants to test whether the stamped ‘self-defense’ on your concealed carry license counts as a legal purpose or not.

Perhaps not at a primary or secondary institution, but they did have one at a law school.

Like they were in Edinboro, PA when a bystander pointed at shotgun at the shooter (who had paused to reload) and subdued the shooter until police arrived 10 minutes later. April 24, 1998.

Actually that was in Grundy, Virginia. (West Virginia has only one law school, at WVU.)

A cousin of mine (by marriage) was a student there at the time. She had gone home for lunch when it happened. Had she been at the school, she probably would have been one of the victims because the gunman hated her.

World Eater, I grew up near Paducah, KY, where there was a shooting in 1997. But since only 3 people died I guess it doesn’t count.

Last I checked, “zero tolerance” was one of thise stupid ideas the right-wing nutjobs liked. You know, black-and-white, good-vs-evil, you’re-either-with-us-or-against-us, no-room-for-context, oversimplification of the issues.

I guess I should thank danceswithcats for demonstrating that it’s only a right-wing issue until it backfires – then they’ll blame it on the liberals, who were opposed to such nonsense to begin with.

I’m actually with the school board on this one, but for reasons other than “zero tolerance.”

All it would take is for one person to cut themselves (deliberately or accidentally) with one of those fillet knives for the school to get its keester sued off. You know that there’s a personal injury lawyer in that area that just needs hair plugs and a shiny new sports car.

You must be reading different stuff than I am, rjung.

Most of the authors at the National Review and the American Spectator are dead set against zero-tolerance, believing, rightly, that it undermines the rule of law and respect for the law.

The only people who ever seemed to be for it was petty bureaucrats, ever risk averse and loath to ever apply judgement and decision-making to any issue.

Funny, I seem to recall plenty of politicians, mostly Republicans, touting zero-tolerance as a solution to Liberal, soft-on-crime Judges.

This whole idiotic hijack reminds me of the poster a few months back who said something like “they don’t have teeter-totters at the park anymore… and that’s why I’ll never vote for a liberal”.

The mind boggles.

My mistake.

I will say though that PA did have (in 1998) a school shooting that left one teacher dead. It was stopped by a bystander with a shotgun. PA is a shall issue state.

Geez. Speaking of shooting yourself in the foot, duffer, you DO realize you’re supposed to draw before you fire? How many of these potshots aiming at lefties but hitting yourself is it gonna take before you learn?

Daniel

What? Do you expect better from duffer?

Besides, were all these zero-tolerance laws passed by majority-Democrat congresses? What about zero-tolerance in regard to drugs? How about three-strikes laws - after all, they’re another effort to remove sentencing discretion from judges.

Shit, these ain’t liberal ideas at all, now, are they?

To be fair, some of the zero-tolerance and three-strikes laws were passed by Dems. But mostly so they couldn’t be painted as “soft on crime” by the GOP, which was blazing the trail.

I agree with ExTank here. The main reason my High School ever creates any rule is to avoid lawsuits filed by idiots. That, and “keeping the general order.”

Referring to it as an “arsenal” is definitely leftwingnut material. Zero-tolerance can be right or leftwingnuttiness.

Huh? Did I just walk into bizzaroland?

I don’t know if I’m being whooshed, duffer, but I grew up in West Bend and I’m hard pressed to think of a more solidly Republican area anywhere this side of Texas than Washington County*.

That said, weirdness, creepiness, and an overall lack of common sense [sub](yes, two high schools in one building)[/sub] seem far too often congenital to the region, irrespective of political leanings.
[sub]*For the record, Bush/Cheney scored over 69% of the vote in Germantown in the last election[/sub]

Ya know, I don’t know that more or fewer people would have died at Columbine had some of the teachers been packing heat. My point is simply, neither does Abbie.

All right, that’s it. EVERYBODY, STOP FUCKING POINTING FINGERS AT PEOPLE OF THE OPPOSITE POLITICAL BELIEFS FROM YOURS.

“Oh, there was a mass murder in insertstatenamehere. I’m not surprised, look, it’s a blue state! They’re being corrupted by the culture!”

“Someone was wrongfully arrested in insertstatenamehere2. Figures, it’s a red state. I’m sure they support facism.”

This bullshit has been going on since the election, but it’s never been as stupid as this thread.

In reading the article it looks like the kits are still being sold. The school board is apologizing for the way the situation was handled, and the whole kerfuffle has doubled the sales. Hell if they had planned this thing as a sales tactic it couldn’t have gone better.

I think the principle was correct in not allowing the fishing kits in the school. The rules are in place, and not exactly kept quiet, and there is no reason the kits can’t be stored somewhere else for parents to pick up. It isn’t like they aren’t going to have to drive to the school to get them anyway.

As a dyed-in-the wool liberal, I think no tolerance policies are stupid and counter productive most times, But even so I don’t think these things should have been on school grounds. They strike me as a really cool kit, and would cause alot of dissruption because everyone would want to play with them. Its bad enough when the damn frozen pizzas arrive.

But…but…Wisconsin was a Blue state (spit), and therefore, anything stupid they do is because of libruls.

You expect Duffer to do anything more than look at a map, see blue, and then blow his own foot off?

He’s a one-trick (actually, more like zero-trick) moron.

The fact that even the Righties around here avoid participating in his threads should tip him off at least a little bit, but he’s not bright enough to figure that one out. Fuck, even reeder caught on and chilled for a little while.
