Theme From The Kids In The Hall And The Daily Show

One and the same?

Thanks

This should have posted in Cafe Society. I was in Cafe Society, but when I was asked to log back in, it threw me in here, and I didn’t realize it.

I would appreciate it if the post could be moved to CS.

Thanks

No, sir.

KITH theme is by great Canadian band “Shadowy Men from A Shadowy Planet,” IIRC the name of the track is “Having an Average Weekend.”

The Daily Show Theme is similar, I grant you, but is a different song & band. Way more produced sound.

The Internet Movie Database says the theme to Kids in the Hall was done by Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. According to the credits of The Daily Show, its theme, “Dog on Fire*,” was written and performed by They Might Be Giants.

So the answer is…no.

*That name always reminds me of a quote from the Simpsons where Homer is watching a “funny-home-video” show. The nominees for the prize winner are “Man Breaking Hip,” “Dog on Fire” (“Ruff! Anybody order a hot dog?”), and “Baby With A Nail Gun.” Homer casts his vote from the couch: “Dog on Fire! Dog on Fire!” It’s funnier said than written.

Shadowy men also do the music for the taco bell commercials too.

Just thought I would throw that in.

“Dog on Fire” is originally by Bob Mould (Husker Du, Sugar), not They Might Be Giants.

Maybe TMBG redid it, but I don’t think that’s the case.

My mistake, I accidentialy added “written.” to a credit that has nothing to that effect. Ya know, “Theme Song ‘Dog on Fire’ by THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS” could be taken two different ways.

Further research…Bob Mould DEFINITELY wrote the The Daily Show theme “Dog on Fire”, but…

They Might Be Giants write the “incidental” music for TDS. It seems they do a fair bit of this…Austin Powers movies, Malcolm in the Middle, etc.

I guess, mobo85, we’re all correct, in a way.

Mould wrote it and they perfom it. That’s what it looks like, and that’s okay with me!

“Woof! Anybody order a hot dog?”

I had the privilege of seeing Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet peform live in Guelph back in the late 80’s. They put on a helluva show. Cross Dick Dale with The Cramps and some heavy pharmaceuticals and you have a close approximation.

Once upon a time – and I’m sorry I missed it – Jon Stewart brought Bob Mould on camera for a David Bowie/Bing Crosby kind of duet.

“Dog on Fire” wasn’t originally performed by They Might Be Giants. A different version was used for most of the show’s run; TMBG re-recorded a slightly faster, harder-edged version and added the “serious news” opening fanfare (All hail the Velcro Horns!) about a year and a half ago when they started doing the incidental music for The Daily Show.

Finally, two of my geekdoms intersect in such a way that I can provide semi-useful information. Huzzah!

Wasn’t that Craig Kilborn who did the duet with Bob Mould?

Might’ve been … like I said, I didn’t actually see it, just read about it.

Great…just reading this thread got the KITH song in my mind, and knowing me, I won’t be able to get rid of it for a while…grrr…
