When I lived in Kansas City I often saw license plate frames on cars purchased from a local dealership named O’Neill Auto, displaying the company’s web url www.oneillauto.com. I always wondered if “one ill auto” was an intentional slurl (in the “to be illin’” sense).

In his lectures (and the Audio Renaissance version of his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces), Joseph Campbell notes that the Hero undergoes Atonemement during his journey, and he observes that you can separate that out into At - One -Ment – “The hero becomes One with the Father,” says Campbell “You can make it read that way, and the word really does have those two separate meanings.”
That’s always bugged me – Campbell can’t mean that the way it sounds. It’s only in English that the double meaning or pun appears, and it’s clearly fortuitous – nobody designed the word “atonement” so that it also could mean “At One Ment”.

Are you sure of that? I had always heard that that is its source.

Except “breakfast” is when you “break your fast”, i.e. eat for the first time. That’s where the word comes from. breakfast - Wiktionary, the free dictionary

My frequent travels are sometimes seen as cause for alarm by employees at firms with which I do business sporadically. They get concerned that I may be unavailable to sign contracts when it’s convenient for them. I tend to do repeat business with firms who recognize that it’s significant that my wife has my power of attorney, and she can sign if I can’t.

Was this intended for another thread (or am I missing something about it)?

I saw a board game this week with the name Fore Station. And I was trying to figure out what the name meant. It seemed to have nothing to do with the theme of the game, which was about managed a wilderness area…

I read a post on Reddit recently (to give credit where it’s due). Some fellow recounted how when he was about 13 he found online porn - one particular site he went to he forgot to delete browsing history and his parents must have checked. They asked the family to sit down after dinner to discuss an important problem with internet browsing. Instead of a lecture about porn, they got questioned about whether any of their friends had used the computer and if any of those friends showed violent tendencies- since someone had been to a website called “myfriendshotmom”
