Thanks for the link, gt! That’s actually quite interesting, and I’m going to pass the link on to our Asian American studies class for discussion.
Jahdra, that sounds like the makings of an intriguing story.
Just got back from a gig with my two Brit friends - The Frames were in Chicago and playing at the Metro. I don’t know them all that well but the gig was fantastic!
I have a Shakespeare sonnet class tomorrow morning, so it’s off to bed for me. Night!!
Haze, yesterday I was reading my usual Spanish online newspapers and I actually thought how, while the articles themselves were clearly written for “the general Hispanic market” by an agency, the headlines and photo captions never mentioned Korea. Yeah, you can see he looks more like his name may be Mao than Mbutu, shrug.
I just took a look at those again; the one that’s local doesn’t even mention VT in the main page; the national one talks about some package Cho sent to NBC between both shootings and has a separate piece about his writings (they had it yesterday and it was their most-visited article for the day). Neither piece mentions Korea anywhere.
And yet, today when I woke up and wasn’t still completely awake I had one of those half-awake revelations that “there’s bound to be some morons who manage to turn this into an excuse to attack the Koreans, North Koreans, Parallel-49 Koreans, greatgrandmother-was-Koreans and, since ‘they all look the same’, spread it to the Vietnamese, Chinese and basically half the planet… groan”
The bread dough is rising, and I am comfortably sure that in six hours we won’t be out of bread anymore. I restrained myself, and only did three batches. I think I’ll make rolls and buns instrad of loaves.
Maybe I should go back to sleep for the first two-hour rise.
Jah, tell us the story as soon as you’ve got it coherent-ized, and lots of hugs.
I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised at how little focus there’s been on Cho’s ethnicity, Nava. I’m sure there are people who will make comments like FCD’s co-workers, but most discussion I’ve heard and read just wonders how a person could do something like that.
Glad you liked the link, Hank.
Guess I should consider breakfast, lunch and getting ready for work.
Jahdra, that sounds like quite a story, I’m ready to be intrigued!
They’re a great band, I went to see them a few weeks ago with 'im indoors at the Glee Club in Birmingham. He didn’t realise until I told him that the singer (Glen Hansard) played Outspan in the Commitments film. See? I know some useless stuff. Great band though, and it’s always good when you see a band and they play your favourite song.
I’m having a busy day today since we’re going away for the weekend tomorrow. So far I’ve been to the petrol station to fill the tank and put air in the tyres. Then I had to go to the garage to get a new spare tyre after I had to change my punctured one the other day. Then I’ve been busy at home doing laundry and ironing. I still have several more things on my list though. I suppose I’d better get busy!
I admit, I didn’t read the phone tree story, or Jahdra’s tale. I’m a bad girl.
My friend and her husband came over last night to meet Smokey. The cat took to him almost right away. Of course, it didn’t hurt that he held her favorite brush out for her, and dangled her favorite fishing pole toy. They said they’d come over at least once a day, maybe twice. They [del]own a cat[/del] have a feline overlord as well, so they understand.
eta: off to work - on time for a change!
I believe you’re talking about last.fm, which has those features available (even to non-members, IIRC).

LiLi, how often do you bake bread? I’m inexperienced and was interested in making homemade bread sometime. Is this more of a “day off” thing, or can I do the prep in shifts, like making the dough/letting it rise and then baking it after a day or two of refrigeration? Mmmm, bread.
The next couple of days are going to be hectic. I’ve been given instructions to keep my phone available to alert me when my SO calls so that, in case there are any other things that need to be collected from the property management company, I can get on it right away. ::shrugs:: This “getting a house to rent” thing is so stressful. I’ve got a zit farm on my chin from all the stress.
Definitely going to listen to the NPR thing tonight when I get home. All Things Considered generally does a pretty good job of dealing with current news issues. I kind of miss listening to Science Friday stuff, though, but it’s nice that I can still listen to Wait, Wait whatever the heck that silly news game is called.
Got my coffee as usual. Still feel half dead. It’s gorgeous and sunny out, though! Finally some weather that can properly call itself “spring.”
Coworker is still off. At this point I don’t expect to see him in the rest of the week. S’okay, though. I’ve been busier than normal (shouldering the bulk of the work) but it’s nothing I can’t handle – and it’s kinda nice having the office to myself.
Jah - That story sounds like it needs a good director. It would certainly make a good MMP OP though.
Savannah - Yeah, Last.fm sound like the ticket. Pandora is similar, though perhaps not quite as feature-filled, and there’s a limit to how many songs you can skip per playlist in a one-hour period.
Hank - I dunno why the media should be interested in his nationality, other than to perhaps paint some kind of implicit “fish out of water” hypothesis on the tragedy. It’s pretty dumb and not a little bit dangerous, but scruples don’t sell as many papers.
Dunno. What did happen to Sean? Did I miss something important while I was gone?
tashii, I bake bread approximately whenever we run out or I feel like it. It’se usually about ever two or three weeks. Bread is very forgiving, and you can stick pretty much any bread recipe in the fridge overnight, and then knead it and let it do its second rise in the morning.
It’s more of an all-day commitment for me because I generally bake in insane quantity, but it doesn’t have to be like that. Mix it and knead it before bed, punch it down and form when you get up, bake in an hour. I like three rises, but if you don’t have time two is okay. It’ll just be a little less fluffy.
Sounds like something I could get into. I like cooking, and I’m sure that kneading dough is a great stress reliever. Besides, it’s probably cheaper than store bought; it sure is tastier, so it’s worth a try. Thanks for the info!
Damn, VB, that is sad. He had made it so far! There’s just no teling about orphans - sometimes they make it and sometime they don’t. I’ve had to bury a few I thought would make it, and had them survive when I thought they didn’t have a chance. I’m lookin’ at you, Dax.
Yes, please, Jahdra, please write the story as the next MMP OP! {{{hugs}}}
I have signed up for the third game of Mafia. Wonder how long I will last?
I need to get moving - I have to go get leg pills (the nurse is going to give me some more samples, the sweetheart) and carry stuff out for the yard sale tomorrow. I’m not sure why she is having the yard sale on Friday instead of Saturday, but oh well.
Don’t be too bummed out. I didn’t tell y’all about the other 2 (!) litters foisted on us last Friday and Saturday. The Pastakids have two new brothers, Ralph and CAPT Hooks; Hercules has 5 his age to fight with for teat space.
Counting the 2 regulars, that means there’s 14 cats in the house. My sinuses are going berserk. VWife has been instructed to tell the shelter “HELL, NO!” WRT any new fosters, on pain of divorce.
I have been remiss in taking squeeable photographs.
Doesn’t the person who dies with the most cat hair on him (or her) win something?
I am sorry about Hercules. I’m going to go hug my two owners now.
Homemade bread is way, way cheaper than store bread, and it gives you that earth-mother I can do it! feeling. It costs eight dollars for a thirty-three pound sack of flour here. Thirty-three ounds of bread would run you a lot more, and yeast and salt are cheap.
