So. My evening has went a little like this:
:dubious:
 $%&#@&% :smack: &@#%*&@#
-$$$
Install new program. Needs to reboot. I reboot. Boot fails. :dubious: Reboot. Boot fails. Turn off computer. Turn it back on. Won’t turn on. Turn it off. Remove power cable. Sit for several minutes in case it’s overheating. Plug cable back in. Still won’t turn on. Rheobus indicates idle current of 10W being drawn, which is normal, but no further power is drawn when power button is pressed.
Unplug power cable. Check connections. Reseat molex connections, just in case. Clear CMOS. Still won’t turn on. Remove power from some peripherals. Check jumpers and posts. Still won’t turn on. Remove power cord. Check innards again. Everything looks fine. Turn case on its side, remove CPU heatsink/fan. Detatch fan, clean fan, clean heat sink fins, reattach fan, add some new thermal paste to CPU (old stuff was dry), reseat heat sink/fan, reattach power cord. Still won’t turn on. Rheobus indicator looks dimmer than usual, like it isn’t getting enough power. Conclude that power supply must have gone, which is a major pisser because that was a really high end power supply. (Thermaltake PurePower modular 500W). $%&#@&%. Set case upright, sit to have a smoke. Look over at case, notice something sticking out perpendicular to the case, realize it’s my mouse’s wireless receiver.
It isn’t supposed to be perpendicular to the case.
 :smack:
In turning the case on its side I neglected to remove the USB devices plugged into the ports on the side of said case. The receiver’s connector end has been bent 90° and is hanging on by a few strands of PCB, which promptly give way as I attempt to straighten it. Now I need a new mouse. Also a high end device. (Can’t buy the receivers separately because they’re frequency-locked to the mouse)

Head over to staples. They have no 500W power supplies, just a cheap-ass “Retail Plus” 460W which nevertheless costs as much as a mid-range IcePower. Well, 460 will do for now. Pick up a replacement mouse. Shell out $175 at the counter.

Get home. Rip out old power supply which is a right snakey bugger but at least it’s modular which makes removal easier. Unfortunately, that means I have to remove the rheobus because it only works with this PSU. Hook up new power supply. Leads are just ever-so-slightly too short to reach one of the hard drives and my video card. Video card can be lifted slightly to juuuuust wedge it in there. The one hard drive gets a molex extender. Pack everything into the case, put the side back on, plug power cord back in, hit the power button, and…
Bastard boots up.
I still have boot issues, which I think is either the motherboard’s BIOS or the motherboard itself, but I can deal with that in time. For now at least the computer is working again.
Freakin’ technology. Never a bloody problem with anything I ever bought 'til I started buying from a friend who runs a computer store. Out of the $2500 I spent with him I’ve had to spend an additional $1,000 due to devices that have failed so far - and they’re high end components (or were a year and change ago) so it’s just weird. But I am convinced his stuff is somehow cursed, so I’m not buying from him anymore.
At least the old power supply has a 5 year warranty, so I can RMA it.
