Yesterday, while I was out driving, I came upon a sad sight, there were two women in obvious emotional distress with their minivan parked on the side of the road, just behind it was a rather large housecat, a Maine Coon, obviously someone’s pet, in obvious pain and distress, it was clear that the minivan driver had hit the cat, and they were trying to find the owners
As I drove past, I saw the cat’s tail twitching with muscle spasms, each twitch getting weaker, as I passed on the opposite side of the road and gazed in it’s direction, I could swear I could hear it calling out “Help Me!, getting weak…why me…”, I could literally feel it’s life force slipping away, it broke my heart, I knew I couldn’t have done anything to help, or even ease it’s suffering, so I steeled my heart, and continued the drive home, all the while, “hearing” the cat calling out in pain and fear
I should have gone back, at least to comfort it, but I had to hope the minivan driver and passenger would do the right thing and take it to the vet
When I arrived home, I tried to find my cat, but he was out in the field hunting, he comes and goes as he pleases, darnit, I wanted to give him some scritchies to make up for my failure to help the car-struck cat…
Today, my cat was hanging around the house, so I took him in, he’s now lounging on the couch, enjoying those belated scritchies…
Mr. Maine Coon, I hope you were taken to the vet, and are on the mend, I hope you’re still with us, and I apologize for not trying to help you, just remember to keep away from the road, m’kay?
Maybe it’s the cynic in me, but something tells me that Minivan Driver was most likely yakking on the cell phone and not paying attention to the road,no matter how it happened, it’s too bad an innocent cat had to get hurt
When you’re out on the road, put the frelling cell phone away, and pay attention!
