There will be a note added to John Cage's "Organ2/ASLSP" on Monday, Feb. 5, 2024

John Cage wrote Organ2/ASLSP “As Slow As Possible” in 1987. While a typical performance lasts around an hour, there have been performances that extend to the 14 hour mark.

On September 5th, 2001, St. Burchardi church in Halberstadt began a performance that will last until September 4, 2640.

At some point today (the article I’ve found doesn’t mention what time), there will be a note added to the already playing chord.

“This coming Monday, 5 February 2024, organ pipes will change once again. The current chord (C, D-flat, D-sharp, E, A-sharp and E) becomes (C, D-flat, D, D-sharp, E, A-sharp and E), meaning a D note will be added.”

This is the first change since February, 2022, and will be the last change until August 5th, 2026.

Poor Diane Luches is still holding Germany’s beer.

I wish my organ had that kind of staying power.

Huh. Between the already dissonant cluster and the fact that D is very much in the middle, I suspect that the difference would be hard to hear. It sure is when I try to play it on my keyboard.

Though, if you’ve listened to it for a while, maybe it would stand out more.

I’m not sure why, but I find it oddly comforting that while there are so many ugly things going on in the world, human beings are complex enough that some are committing this much effort to doing something so profoundly weird.

I was all set to get a ticket for the finale on September 4, 2640 but, would you believe it, I have a BBQ on the same day.

I’m waiting for the Ryan Adams cover.

You’re reminding me of an old Russian joke…

“There you are, sir. We’ve ordered your Lada. It should be delivered in fourteen years.”

“Will that be morning or afternoon?”

“Uhh, it will be fourteen years from now - why do you need to know that far in advance?”

“In fourteen years, plumber is coming in the morning.”
