Yeah, because democracy is so fucking fragile that it cannot withstand one election that doesn’t go your way. We might as well close up shop and head for hills, as we are totally doomed.
:wally
You suck.
BTW, I’m a democrat.

Spoofe:
Relax, dude, I was venting. It’s a morning after BBQ rant.
Jesus Christ, get a sense of hyperbole.
Gloom, despair, agony on me.
whoooooah
Deep dark depression, excessive misery.
whooooah
If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.
whoooooah
Gloom, despair, agony on me.
Mensch
Fisher had the old eight year jinx working against him. Well, that and Rendell’s mountains of money.
Diogenes,
I’ve been trying to convince myself that the Republicans are not as bad as they sometimes seem. Maybe they’ll follow through on some of their promises? Not the whole raping the environment promise, but ‘the economy will get better’? Maybe?
I had thought Minnesota was a nice, liberal state…sure it’s cold here, but we were good people. Now some of those southern states are looking pretty good, I bet it hasn’t even been snowing in some of them…
Diogenes:
Probably you meant spooje. There is a SPOOFE, but it wasn’t him that posted.
Oops, yes Carrot is right. I meant SPOOGE, not SPOOFE. Sorry Spoofe.
Not only for Coleman, but the Republican candidate not only won the Governors office but won it with umpf!!
Until recently, the question was not were taxes going to go up or not but whether they were going to go up hugely or gigantically. They were talking gas tax, property tax, income tax, tax tax tax tax more tax increase tax tax this tax that increase tax taxtaxtax taxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtaxtax
and more tax.
Then Pawlenty wins handily with his platform of NO NEW TAXES!
Thank the heavens there are actually people that think similarly with me on this. I was beginning to wonder.
To be honest, I knew this election was going to tilt to the favor of the Republicans. With the massive fundraising efforts that the Republicans have been doing and the stumping by the president and vice-president the past few weeks, I would have been surprised if it hadn’t gone in their favor. The Democrats, in my opinion, didn’t really put an effective or very well-organized strategy.
The Democrats could have latched onto any number of issues: the economy, the corporate scandals, etc. However, they failed to materialize them into anything loud or clear enough to get through to the voters and make them care about those issues. On the other hand, the Republicans were quite successful in trumpeting the need for homeland security, continuing to fight terrorism, and point to Democrats as the hold-ups in accomplishing those goals. It simply came down to effectiveness, I think.
I’m somewhat disappointed in the election results, but I don’t think it’s as bad as some people think it’s going to be. Not all of the Republicans elected yesterday are going to from the same brand of conservatism that the president is. Yes, I find it troubling that one party has control of the three branches of government (even if it is my party), but bear in mind that the majority in Congress isn’t by much. There will still be problems getting many of parts of Bush’s agenda passed.
Besides, this election isn’t the end of the world. In two years, we have another chance to vote and change out the representatives, another third of the senators, and the adminstration officials. The state elections will have to wait four more years, but the point is that we will get another chance to vote and (hopefully) correct any problems that might happen.
Yes, I know that my youth and optimism are shining through disgustingly.
Diogenes, dude, you didn’t mean spooge either…it was spooje. A small distinction, to be sure, but it’s really funny that you keep messing it up.
andymurph, he didn’t ask you to read his lips, did he?
Nope, I think he’s legit!
Sadly, I think you’re wrong. If ever there was a time that Democrats should’ve been at their polling places in droves, this was it. After the debacle of 2000, we swore we’d show 'em in this election, and instead, we were (as a group) a bunch of pansie-assed, lazy fucks who didn’t have the balls to get the fuck out and vote. Where the hell were all the Floridians who were completely ripped off in 2000??? The jackass who put Katherine Harris in office is still running that state! Do you really think that if we weren’t mad enough after the last election to do something about it this time that we’ll suddenly give a shit in '04? I’m disgusted and ashamed of my fellow Democrats who let this election slip through our fingers. It’s our own damn fault and I’m pissed. Fuck every one of you who didn’t vote.
At least Max Sandlin won in District 1 in Texas.
…And they elected Katherine Harris to Congress, too.
Apparently the nightmare didn’t sink in over the past two years. Perhaps in another two years, people will look around, see how much they’ve lost and how very little they’ve gained, and ask themselves why they voted for someone who supports their bosses instead of them.
On the bright side, I think now that America has chosen to go with the Old Boys Club, all that war talk will evaporate faster than a middle-class tax cut.
I completely agree with Siegfried on this, I share his views and I’m no kid. But at the same time I also think Shayna is right. Now remember I’m a Republican, but I don’t support the far right or the CC, it’s my fear that Shayna is right and in 2004 the Reps will gain more ground. Since the CC is so dominate a voice in the party more of their social agenda will get passed. That’s my fear and I back the party!? I consider myself a moderate Republican, but I fear in the future I will become just a moderate…
Sigh… I should be happy, but I’m not.
My new governor is Bill Richardson.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrgggghh!!!
Oops. Wrong thread. My appologies.
Rickjay masterfully composed:
Feh. Sanchez would have been worse than Anaya was. And I never would have thought that possible.
(I’m quite glad Senator Pete rolled, though. Good man, good senator, and damn good Neuvo Mexicano.)
One thing I do not understand at all is the Georgia Senate race. Perhaps some GA dopers can clue me in, but:
How in the HELL can Max Cleland, a vietnam veteran who lost both legs and an arm during Vietnam, loose to the draft dodging chickenhawk Saxby Chambliss who accused Cleland of being unpatriotic??? From one ad run by Chambliss:
“America faces terrorists and extremist dictators.
Max Cleland says he has the courage to lead.
But the record proves Max Cleland is just misleading.”
Again, the man lost both legs and an arm in Vietnam!!!
