Thank you for the civil response. While I have no fondness for for Glen Beck, it was hardly his exclusive story. It was all over the media. Concerning the Breitbart article, I just thought it was an interesting article and worthy of discussion. Bottom line is I should be very wary of any sources, both right and left. I’m pretty much a nonpolitical person who doesn’t grind the media. Live and learn.
Also, learn to not accuse people of doing things they did not do.
This does not go over very well.
Also, learn to not create multiple accounts on SDMB.
Learning is good!
I can do that.
I mean, your point is really goddamned stupid, so I’ll make fun of you for it. If I’m a prick for making fun of people someone who says narcissistic self-pitying things and turns an entire thread about someone else into an attempted pity-party, call me Long Dong Silver.
LOL. In my previous interaction with him I didn’t call him a racist, but I did imply that he’s a poor learner.
He may be a poor learner, but he’s good at derailing pittings. Racist Waldo is probably paying him under the table.
Getting back on topic, who cares if white supremacists make some good points? There are other people who are not white supremacists making the same good points.
To borrow Left_Hand_of_Dorkness’ analogy, if I go to the table and see some plates have roast chicken and a baked potato and some plates have roast chicken, a baked potato, and a turd, I’m not going to pick one of the plates with a turd.
If you wanted roast chicken and a potato, you could have taken any plate. If you chose a plate with a turd, it’s because you wanted that turd even if you won’t admit it out loud.
‘Look, I admit the whole “Let’s kill all the Jews!” is a little over the top, but you must admit the economic policies of Mr. Hitler are the best way to see a prosperous Germany in 1946!’
I’d accuse you folks of falling into a Godwin’s Law situation but to be honest the RepubliQanons like MGT (not a typo this time, this time it’s a slur) are arm-in-arm with actual Neo-Nazis so you are forgiven.
Hey, if we weren’t supposed to make comparisons involving Nazis or Hitler it would be Godwin’s Suggestion not Godwin’s Law!
Mike Godwin on the American RW :
By all means, compare these shitheads to the Nazis. Again and again. I’m with you.
When your political ideology supports violently overthrowing the government so your leader can assume power and protect your nation’s racial purity, the comparisons to Nazism are going to happen. Admittedly, the swastikas were also a pointer.
Stealing that
As it was the proto-Nazis, the American Confederates and then the enforcers of the Jim Crow laws.
I’ll say something for Waldo Pepper:
Generally, if you invite people to respond with their viewpoints on a controversial matter, then you owe them a certain amount of good faith to hear them out, since you gave the invitation. (Not “you” as in you personally, OP, but in general.)
Waldo Pepper didn’t start that “racist caucus” thread; someone else did, and then Czarcasm chimed in saying that he’d like to hear out what Republicans had to say about the topic. And so Waldo Pepper obliged.
It’s not as if Waldo Pepper himself started the thread and said, “the GOP just did a good thing by proposing this caucus.” Had he said that, then for him to be pitted would only be natural.
I’m not a fan of Fidel Castro or his regime, for instance, by analogy. But if I announce, “I would like to hear what any supporters of Castro have to say,” then I owe any Castro supporters who do give a reply a certain amount of courtesy and good faith. It wouldn’t be fair for me to say, “I want to hear some pro-Castro arguments,” then promptly blast people for giving me…the very pro-Fidel arguments I asked for. That would be disingenuous.
Czarcasm didn’t say ‘I would like to hear what any supporters of this caucus document had to say’. Czarcasm asked, not very politely but hey the thread’s in the Pit, what Republicans in general had to say.
Quite a lot of Republicans have come out in public against the proposed caucus, some of them quite vehemently. That isn’t what Waldo Pepper had to say.
Nah, as a Hispanic American with liberal ideas, I would shoot down those pro-Fidel arguments… What? You thought that centrists or liberals are communists like the caricature right-wingers use every time?
Waldo replied to the following request (and immediately started playing word games):
He knew what he was doing, and it wasn’t engaging in good faith debate about immigration policy.
This is the Straight Dope. Any opinion is open for debate, solicited or not. That’s The whole point of these boards. And white supremacist views, when expressed, are always Pit-worthy.
I agree. I’d rather debate the points of an issue than just exchange insults.
But sometimes debating an issue includes pointing out how weak the argument in support of one side of the issue is. The people who support that side are, of course, free to offer evidence that the argument is stronger.
