After much wrangling, going backwards and forwards, uncertainty, late nights, sleepless nights, battling with uni admin, the French Govt have finally agreed that I have the degree that I have, and have signed my contract! I start my new job on Wednesday.
Congrats! Knock 'em dead! Viva la Angua!
Congratulations!!!
Time to brush up on your frog-taste-appreciation skills
Thanks guys!
This has been an absolute nightmare though. I got a phonecall from my new boss on the 5th October that the bigwig wouldn’t sign my contract because the letter from the university said that I’d have a PhD once the corrections were done, rather than I had a PhD pending corrections. The only way that the uni would say that I had a PhD would be once I’d finished the corrections. So, I worked all night Thursday, all day Friday, went to teach a week long course, during which my advisor and university based examiner begged and pleaded with the academic office to accept an electronic submission to my externally based examiner. They said OK, and I got back, and did the final bits of corrections with one hour’s worth of sleep on Monday. Sent it to the external on Monday afternoon. External faxed the corrections certificate back on Tuesday afternoon, I went to the academic office first thing Wednesday morning to hand everything in. They said it’d be 21 days before I’d get confirmation. I kicked up a fuss and had a form letter by midday, and faxed it straight to France. I got confirmation yesterday at half five that they’ve signed!

Woooo!
Congratulations, Dr Angua!
Does Uberwald make chocolate or only cuckoo clocks?
No wonder we haven’t seen much of you here lately!
Well, all’s well that ends well, anyway (and you got yet one more valuable lesson in real-life elbow-pushing things around) – time to lay back a bit, enjoy a short bit of time off, and recharge your batteries for getting back to work. Although I’m sure it will be a piece of cake compared to the wringer you’ve gone through!
BTW, I’m pretty sure that I’m the only guy to haveposted to this thread so far
Woohoo! Wishing you luck and joy in your new career!
Woohoo! Give my regards to Paris, and as I learned the hard way not long ago, the garbled announcement on the empty RER train can mean, “This train is being taken out of service.” So if something seems a bit out of order on public transit, it probably is, and you should ask what’s going on. Unless, of course, you have a burning desire to see a half-abandoned train yard rather than catch your flight home. (In retrospect, missing my flight might not have been such a horrible thing.)
Seriously, have a blast! Have you spent much time in Paris until now? How’s your French coming along?
Only cuckoo clocks here. But in Paris, there will be chocolate. Lots and lots of good chocolate! The valrhona! It will be mine! Mine! All mine!!
ahem
Eva, I’ve not spent that long in Paris before now, and am heading out on the 6th (the 1st is a holiday and the institute is closed on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd ). My French is passable enough to get me by, but needs more work. I think I’ll be borrowing Bonzer’s phrase books!
