Things I (we?) should buy in the MMP

Congratulations indeed!

I assume you meant haven’t been. Remember: Based on your standards, you’re perfectly normal – it’s the rest of the world that’s screwed up.

Better yet go on Amazon and look for ‘power bank’, checking the reviews. I’d recommend going with a tried and true brand like Anker or Belkin. My systems admin IT techie son recommends Anker for things like that and charging cables and cords.

On WalMart.com you are often getting them as just a re-seller for some obscure source that can disappear or is unaccountable when something goes wrong or doesn’t work. For things like this stick with known brands.

Yoga’d, cleaned, and caffeinated. I’ve got my epidural this afternoon, so no work for Mollie today. We had a good walk this morning. Chloé was all over the place and was just happy to be. I’ve been in a good mood since sharing my news with real life friends and their positive reactions. I know there will be a setback in the future, but that’s Future Mollie’s problem. She knows what she did.

Things I need to buy: I need to get a new wig and I need to do it correctly at a shop with a stylist. That’s just expensive.

Shoe - I’d always kept a set of jumper cables in my car. They have since moved on to my son after I sold him the Prius. I’m not entirely sure whether I can get/give a jump with My Ioniq 6. I’m not even sure where the 12 volt battery is.

And also with you.

Nice! Good for Pullin-son!

Cookie - That sounds like a scam. I’d log into IRS.gov and find out the real skinney.

Mrs Magill is a fan of the Aldi’s Aisle of Shame.

You would be correct. I’m still looking for the “New Normal.”

I’ve been thinking of sharing how I’d had my epiphany a few months ago. With the passage of time, I fell like I can look back and laugh a bit at myself.

Oh, you’re allowed!

Slept hard last night - I was a very tahred Shoe - but I did manage to scrape together enough of myself after work to take out half a metric buttload of trash, including dumping Monkey’s :poop: box, and rolling the whole mess to the curb.

Speaking of :poop: I got tired of him tracking tiny grains of standard clay litter everywhere, so I bought tiny gem-crystal litter, and refilled his box with that last night. I really hope it solves the problem, and also that he doesn’t boycott the change and find someplace else.

It’s in the low 60s so I just opened the side door and encouraged him to get up off his ass go outside and enjoy the sunshine.

There’s definitely a poop joke in there somewhere.

Wut?

Got one of those after a storm knocked out power for half of an eternity a coupla days. Good for peace of mind.

I’ve heard of this. Old-timey things can be weird.

Heh. Me too, although you 'splained better than I could have.

If ya know, ya know.

When I got to Aldi, I bring coupla-three canvas bags, and use those instead of a cart. Once they’re full, I’m done shopping. But I do head down That Aisle to get to the cashier, which can be … interesting.

Anyway, that’s my “Aldi Budget” which now I realize is eerily similar to looters during a riot: as much as I can comfortably carry.

Always a good thing.

Oh, and to counter-answer my own OP, here’s something I don’t need to buy: anti-aging night cream.

My mom unexpectedly sent me a pot of what S.M. assured me is a Very Nice Brand of the stuff, as a gift for my Name Day, which is today.

But I’m not even a quarter of the way through the last pot of anti-looking-older goop, and frankly, I’m thinking she might be hinting at something. :frowning:

For those of you getting letters from IRS that you are due a refund, it is probably not spam but an actual refund. The tax on Social Security has changed and lots of us oldies are getting refunds. And you don’t have to give them your info, just ask them to mail you a check, which they will. Eventually.

Night lights used to come with a Christmas tree bulb (we call them ‘lamps’ in the electrician trade).

The one Early AM clerk and the Senior Clerk both called out, so J was all alone on the 300 Slide, and I was holding down the 100 and 200. And as usual, when I got a huge chunk of time sensitive work directly in front of me, a PT Sup tries to get me to do something else. I did help catch up the 300 slide, before going back to the 200 for the damages and overgoods. But that’s just more hours for me. I did my Aldi run($58), and got gas ($4.29/gal). I don’t thin that qualifies as one “winning”, let alone a one hour loop.

Solar outdoor lights. 90% use rechargeable AA batteries, so useful in an emergency as chargers.

I had one, it crapped out after a couple of usues. But not a bad thing for a one time use emergency gadget.

And Also With You

Do you think you could get them to assemble Voltron style, and fight Onan?

I don’t think Treebeard would be fond of that.

Congrats! And may he soar like a leaf on the wind.

Bummer. My Calphalon ones are chugging along nicely.

“Fair skies and following winds!”

I have unearthed and piled 10 of those deck blocks on the cart, but I fear it’s too heavy for us to move by hand. FCD thinks he might want to keep them but I’d like to Marketplace the lot of 'em. We shall see…

I think I’ve worked out how to deal with all the gravel - a path around the new garden bed! I was going to use pavers, but now I’m thinking a gravel bed and staggered pavers on top. I just need to lay it out for easy mowing. For now, tho, I’ve stopped. My back needs some tylenol and I need a breather.

No, what I need is a landscaper who does charity work for worn-out seniors. Alas.

It’s pretty low toxicity and breaks down fast, so… leave it a week or so before harvesting and wash it before eating, should be fine. Only issue is, in my experience it’s pretty low toxicity to the bugs you were trying to kill as well…

Anyway, in local news, Dad has actually been discharged and sent home from hospital this afternoon. Bit of a surprise, as they’d said it would be 7-10 days and it’s only been 4, but he’s back to eating normally and they’ve taken all the tubes out.

I guess if they tell people it’s 7-10 days and it’s less, everyone’s happy, but if they say it could be anywhere between 4-10 depending, people start worrying when it passes 5. My personal experience of the NHS is that they tend to err on the side of keeping people in longer than really needed, rather than kicking them out too soon (which is one reason for the much publicised delays), so it sounds really promising that he’ll be OK. I guess your good wishes helped!

On the subject of buying stuff, I am trying very hard not to keep buying plants and seeds. I already have more than I can find space for, and I’m still sowing more stuff, but… I want to grow all the things. It distracts me from the chaos which is my life, and besides, it’s so satisfying when you buy a pack of seeds for basically nothing and you pick food for weeks off it.

Other than that, I don’t need much more stuff (except maybe an MP3 player to replace the one that got pinched a few months back, which was my car entertainment system). I certainly don’t need pans, I have plenty of pans, most of which were given to me free by a very nice total stranger right as I was moving house and needing to stock my own kitchen on a tiny budget for the first time ever. That was nearly 20 years ago and they’re still going great. I have some nice cuisinart cast iron frying pans as well, bought dirt cheap second hand. It’s a shame I’m not a very good cook really, I have some decent stuff.

Howdy all. In hour 3.5 of what I was told would be a 2-hour job. Just a recall update so don’t know what is taking so long. Shopping and sammich are now in SNAFU territory and gym is nearing FUBAR status. Great way to start the week. At least they have a popcorn popper in the waiting room.

More later.

Still waiting for my epidural. The surgeon is backed up.

For those who are not on my FB feed, here’s how things stand at the moment:

I have a plan - I just need to execute it! But first, I need to find the rolls of landscape cloth I bought. Maybe in the garage? Maybe in the garden shed?

Folks tend to make fun of us preppers because our trunks always have a least one box of “just in case” stuff. Jumper cables, power bank, mini-air compressor, basic tools, flash lights, flares, emergency blankets, food, water and an unread book are all safely stored in both of our trunks. Just in case.

I’m so happy you brought this up, I was wondering how it was growing. Are you going to keep it in the tub? Does it get cold enough that you will have to bring it in for the winter? I have a rather not-spendy one in a pot in the front yard, but would like to keep it alive if possible.

Neem oil is pet safe and can be used up until the day of harvest. It isn’t a pesticide, it is just an oil coating to protect the plant from the pests. If you use enough, you will coat the bugs so they can’t breathe. I spray everything with the neem oil (don’t forget the bottoms of the leaves and stems), wait an hour or so and then spray the bugs off with water. Let the plants dry and spray them again.

(I’m growing a lemon tree in a totally unsuitable environment, I’m learning a LOT about pest control because the poor thing has no defenses.)

If you haven’t already called, do it now. Consider yourself to be nagged! I hope they figure otu what’s happening and fix it for you.

I think your idea sounds very practical. Taking wheels off vehicles is a young persons game, make them do it for you! Did they have to order the tires when you bought them? If so, maybe call them and make an appointment so they will have everything they need.

HURRAY!!! :tada: Good for him, I know he worked for it!

Hubs has been living mostly on chicken or beans, salads or steamed veggies. He’s been experimenting with pork with mixed results. He is drinking half a gallon of water a day and eats a bowl of tart cherries every night. So far, that along with his daily meds, he’s been OK. He had two beers one evening and felt a flare coming on two days later, so no more IPAs for him.

We just got a couple of power flickers, so I’m going to click reply and see what’s going to happen.

The Force Fourth is not with either of you today.

Frankly, after trying some of the fancy stuff, I’ve found that something with appropriate sunscreen for daytime and just the usual Lubriderm for nighttime. The rest is marketing.

Yay!

Sis uses this and pyrethrin as pesticides in her gardens. Neem oil can also be blended with coconut oil and beeswax to make a salve to treat flea bites on dogs and cats.

I made the run to Giant Dollar and got out for ~$10, so’s I didn’t do to badly. I went in for cotton cosmetic squares (I use them instead of cotton balls when dealing with insulin), which would have been $3, but picked up some kitchen sponge thingies, some sticky gems for the studio and some magnetic sheets, so still didn’t do much damage.

Done and home. My left leg will be useless for the next four to six hours, which is why I try to schedule these things in the morning.

A bit of a mixed blessing: this is my first epidural in about nine months[1], but either I had grown unused to it, or he hit the nerve head on, because this one fucking hurt.

  1. Thanks, yoga! ↩︎

Done. I’ll be seeing Treebeard, that is, the ENT, tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. I think he squeezed me in on his lunch hour because I sounded so pathetic in my email. Bless him. If it’s something that needs treatment ASAP, I don’t want to wait weeks to see a doc.

I’ll be keep the dahlia in its big tub. It has a lot of high quality potting mix to eat, and I’ll give it a light feeding of blooming plant food periodically. I’m waiting for it to get 18" high so I can “top” it, that is, chop out the central stem so that all the side stems will grow and it’ll produce more flowers. That’s what the dahlia farm says to do, anyway, on a youtube tutorial.

Sorry.
