A repeat of the 2007-2009 financial crisis.
Too late! Contestants on America’s Game, Wheel of Fortune, have already talked about their same sex husbands/wives. Oh the horror!
FTL
Apparently I’ve been participating in gay activities since the fourth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer without even knowing it.
Go big or go home. I’m predicting a repeat of the 1929-1932 financial crisis.
This could be fun! Add in the impending Race War and we’ll really have something!
I’ve got my Apple polishing cloth all ready.
Here’s a good one: Food and water shortages in America.Entire cities will be abandoned.
It will be caused by climate change. A five year drought with virtually no snow in the mountains would leave Los Angeles with no drinking water.
Cape Town faced that situation, and handled it with amazing success. American society will not.
The same drought will lead to disruption in the food industry. (not just higher prices, but actual food shortages).
There will be massive rioting and shooting in the streets.
Have a nice day.
I don’t work in agriculture, but here is why I don’t think food shortages in wealthy nations will happen anytime soon.
-
there is a lot of land that could be used as farmland, but isn’t. In a crisis situation, that land gets used for growing food (a lot of land in Eastern europe for example isn’t used).
-
Of the land that is used, a lot isn’t used efficiently. A lot doesn’t use western levels of technology to drastically improve their crop yields.
-
Of crops grown, not all are high calorie staple crops. Crops like potatoes, corn, wheat, rice, jackfruit, etc provide a lot of calories per acre, while other crops like vegetables produce very little.
-
A lot of crops grown are used inefficiently. Like for animal feed, or for industrial purposes.
Basically, there are a lot of things we can do to ensure people survive. Start new farms on existing land, make sure existing farms use western technology, make sure farms are devoted to high calorie staple crops, make sure all crops are used for human consumption and not for industrial or animal feeds.
There may be food riots in poor nations, but I doubt in wealthy nations. Wealthy nations are too resilient to have that happen unless something really bad happens, like a meteor strike.
Yeah but the people who want to live in a tyrannical dystopia are about ~25% of American voters, maybe 30 million people. Can those 30 million people impose a dictatorship on a nation of 330 million, many of whom wouldn’t like to live in a dictatorship? Any tyrannical dictatorship will likely be one that puts men, whites and christians above all others. Sooo many Americans don’t fall into those categories, that I don’t know if they’d agree to submit. But what do I know, I thought it was impossible for Trump to win more than 50 million votes.
My predictions:
Being a nazi or KKK member isn’t shamed anymore (already happening).
Atheism becomes a mainstream belief in muslim majority nations, causing massive tensions.
A far right president is elected in France
The Chinese use genetic engineering to create a race of super smart genius babies.
Being required to watch a movie in which two men or two women are simply a couple, is not remotely worthy of controversy, unless the idea of being required to watch anything at all (regardless of its content) was controversial in the first place. Someone who is inclined to complain about the mere existence of same-sex couples (or other queer couples, whatever) is not qualified to exit their own home.
Refusing or showing disgust - what happens when students show disgust at some random other geography-class material? Expect similar. This whole thing is just not a potential issue. The mere existence of same-sex couples etc is first-grader-safe material. Like Forrest Gump said: “It happens.” ![]()
Sure; tyrannies that favor only a small portion of the population while crushing everyone else have been common.
And ethnic/religious cleansing means that it won’t* be* 30 million against 300 million for long. Eliminating non-whites by itself will reduce the population by a third.
There was the WTC bombing, Oklahoma City bombing…
This is perhaps more likely than not. Blues defending 25 seats, Reds defending only 9.
I donno. The middle one is still not likely but Article 9 will go. It’s a matter of when, not if. They already have aircraft carriers. Oh, wait. Helicopter carriers that take a minor modification.
Thats a very good point.
I agree that christian white nationalists want to live in a dictatorship. I just don’t know how successful they will be in achieving that goal.
There will be a major american election where one or more branches of the federal government rejects the validity of the outcome and refuses to honor it, proposing that people maintain the prior status quo while things are ‘worked out’.
I’m afraid to predict how America’s lurch toward tyranny will play out, but this complacency is misplaced. An optimist like Wesley Clark must be unfamiliar with how swiftly catastrophe can arrive.
The Nazis got barely 37% of the vote in the 1932 German elections, but through stubbornness and trickery* were soon ruling the country. (* - was the Reichstag fire a “false flag” operation?) Sound familiar? Anyone doubt that Bolton will happily stage a false-flag attack, perhaps with Russian assistance, if the GOP is in danger of losing the 2020 election?
Some of the people who should be leading the resistance seemed more concerned about whether Trevor Noah had apologized enough. Things may work out . But I think there’s a pretty fair chance that, before long, 2018 will be viewed as “the good old days.”
Some jurisdiction (city, county, whatever) will institute an ethnic requirement for voting, claiming first amendment rights or something.
I’m not saying it will stick, but the way the country is going, I can abolutely see this “never again” scenario happening. Again.
This is frighteningly possible.
I had a very interesting discussion with a relatively high-ranking officer in the Canadian military a while back. It was his professional opinion that there will be some sort of violent conflict between Canada and the US in the next thirty years over fresh water. We (Canada) are going to lose, and if we’re very, very lucky, it won’t start WW3, but he’s not holding his breath.
I’m a bit skeptical, but this guy is smarter than me, better informed than me, and he was stone cold serious about this, so I can’t dismiss it out of hand. I wish I could.
