Things that go "HELP!!!!" in the night... my first MMP

Hey again

I’m kinda new at this, so I asked FCM for the “rules”, and she wrote back to just “jump in”, so that’s what I have been trying to do, and still kinda keep “on topic” (someone’s topic, anyway  )

I noticed that your SO works at Godard, FairyChatMom, so could you ask him if he’s familiar with a program called “Space Night”?

If not, I wouldn’t be surprised because it originates in Germany and is played in the wee hours of the morning on Bayerische Rundfunk (cool name for a network, huh? ) and is a program which shows satellite images of of the Space Station and Earth and is always accompanied by “space music”. It airs for about three hours, and when I’m “home” and can’t sleep, I always tune it in and it relaxes me.

The reason I am posting this here is to get you to ask him if he knows of the program and if any DVD’s of it are available here in the US? I can order them sent to me from Germany, but would have to pay to have them converted to our system.

So… I hope I did this right, or should I have posted it in GQ, or what?

Thanks

Quasi

GT - Indeed, when I got to work and realized my phone was totally missing, I got all panicky and for the rest of the day felt like I was missing something important. I really didn’t think I relied on my cell phone so much – it’s mainly for personal use so it’s not like I have business to do on it – and yet I needed it back, dammit!

Haze - Funny, you don’t look like a Hank. Nonetheless, you’re a very fine Hank. Mmmm. Hank.

Rosie - 'Fraid mimeographs were before my time, but I do remember thermal fax machines. They smelled like ozone. Actually, speaking of ozone, my dad used to have this rather stiff, heavy blanket back in the day – it was simply awesome for making a tent out of because you could pull it up in a teepee formation and it would stay that way. It was of a material though that generated enough static electricity to power my block, and whenever I pulled it apart from a previously bunched-up configuration, the arcing from all the built-up static made it smell like ozone.

Whelp, I need to get me some sleep 'fore I nod off on my keybafhpxjdfh

Hey haze - nice pics…I’ll join in the “old man winking at you” tango line, 'k?
I’m up late, my neck hurts and I have to get my picks done for the football pool before morning, so I’m outta here!

Ooh, thanks for reminding me! I keep forgetting that they play a game on Thursday now.

Aw, thanks y’all. (Hm. But how do you guys know what I look like behind the compact I’m using to cover half my face? :dubious:  )

rosie, it’s a small mirror compact. I was with a friend who mentioned her phobia of insect eyes, so those pictures are actually of me trying to imitate a dragonfly in order to freak her out. (She ended up laughing at me instead.)

Just got back from watching Borat. It was hilarious in a really, really disturbing way.

Lessee…

gratz BibKitty, I think I hadn’t said it. My grandma treats everything with food, so to her anything that can’t be solved by eating something is just unconceivable. Bad tummies leave her completely beffudled, she just doesn’t get it.

She keeps a bottle of Aspirin in the counter under the TV. The rest of the world calls that bottle “cognac” or “brandy”, depending on where it got made. She used to treat any aches with a tumbler of Aspirin and was stunned that it didn’t really work on her knee, starting a couple years back. It’s got to be disgusting or something, being 91 and getting your second somewhat serious illness ever: “initial arthritis in right knee” (her gallbladder got taken out when she was 84).

Gratz to Mindfield and FCD too and good vibes sent the way of FCM and Pugsy

Sorry if I left anybody out! It wasn’t intentional!

From a list of things I never thought I’d say:

Funniest male on male nude wrestling ever.

  1. Oh, my! Dittoes…purple…I used to know how to use those machines. (And they came in other colors too. I inherited green ditto masters at some point.) They were around through most of my grad school career, into the '80s. FTR they were officially called spirit duplicators. Mimeos were a whole 'nother machine that let you make a higher volume of copies. Mimeos didn’t smell good at all. Yes, I taught at large universities for something like 10 years in the distant past. But, yes, the smell of purple dittoes is something that’s very clear in my memory. I can even see the location of our machine at OSU.

  2. Rum balls: vanilla wafers, nuts, cocoa, corn syrup, rum. Roll in sugar. Here’s a nice description with hints and a recipe.. Those of you who like to bake LiLi, susan_foster, MagicEyes, Baker(don’t know if you read the MMP), and whoever I’m forgetting: check out that website. I used that and this one for mine. You use about the same weight in nuts <snerk> and vanilla wafers. Also, I used about 4 tablespoons of cocoa when I made mine. I made 64 of them.

  3. Speaking of recipes, this one’s a hoot.

  4. Congratulations, BibKitty! Forgot that somewhere along the way.

  5. Nava - your grandma is a real character. I’m so glad she’s been so healthy. Hope she can keep enjoying that Aspirin for a long time. Do you want to know how often we wondered whether you’d taken your car to Switzerland? You did remember it, didn’t you? And how about Germany. Or did you fly there?

  6. I miss my grandma. She was a real character too. She quit smoking cold turkey when she figured out how many additional cruises she could pay for if she stopped. I think she was in her 70s when she stopped. Also, she discovered Saturday Night Live in her eighties. She and grandad thought it was hilarious. She lived to be 93 and lived on her own (someone came in and cleaned and did other basic stuff for her the last couple years) until about 6 months before she died.

[Cheerleader voice] OK! I’m awake! I need to get ready for work! Woo hoo! Go GT![/CV] (Was there any sincerity in there at all?) Happy Thursday!

GT

Mornin’ everybody! Or afternoon if you’re BooFae or Nav.

Yay for all the stuff that needs yays. Aww for all the stuff that needs awws. Assorted other expressions wherever they may be needed. I read everything I’m just not real up on actually remembering who’s who right now. I seem to recall a found phone, a date that will probably end up as friends (not a bad thing), a bonus, an AC, a case of the trots, and arthritis. My sinuses are kinda achy today (dang weather!) so I’m not real focused here. If things look ok on the work front I just may go back home in a while and drug myself up and snooze. I wanna go look at pretty and tacky Christmas stuff tonight like we’re supposed to do provided it doesn’t rain which it might or might not do later today. Stoopid weather!

Good morning! I am awake, but I’m gonna fix that shortly. It’s a bit of a hell week, on 8, off 6 through Friday.

Haze, I too have a sudden Hankering.

rosie, friend are good. Mom had new knees a few years ago, and she walks pretty good. Dad jokes about getting a new wife, a piece at a time.
Quasi, they run a NASA feed on the local cable system. Sometimes there is music, too.

g’d’mernin
it’s drizzling here - has been since yesterday (danks og it ain’t cold enuf to snow) Smokey is being uber-affectionate this morning - she is right nestled against my left arm, making it tough to type without disturbing her - if I move my arm too much, she digs her SHARP little claws in.

We have another Sing tonight (that’s what we call them - their too informal to be called concerts with too much of an audience to be called an open rehearsal) I have some ;eftovers from last night for lunch today (mmmm  wilted, overdressed sald greens with grilled chicken)

Have a nice Thursday, all. See you tonight.

Afternoon, all! What a day…it’s very windy here again today, the weatherman promised us storm force gusts up to 80mph with high likelihood of structural damage. Oh joys. It looks like we’ve already lost a couple of roof tiles from Fortress Smid but it’s not exactly the best kind of weather to get up on the roof and have a look. I might send 'im indoors up into the roofspace just to see if there’s any obvious chinks of light, otherwise it’ll have to wait a bit longer.

Work is entering a new kind of hell today. We are graduating students this week, that means my section has to provide staff to do various duties in the Great Hall during the graduation ceremonies. I thought I was in luck as I’m only on standby this time but someone’s called in sick so I have to go and do battle with idiot students this afternoon.

I hope this time I get the ones that understand when I tell them to sit in their seat and stay in it until they’re told to move, they realise I mean it. Now, where’d I leave my pointy stick?

A little Thursday entertainment for your enjoyment.

Bambi vs Godzilla

Ain’t nuttin’ like the good ol’ classics, I say.

I keep meaning to post my two favorite holiday questions - they’re a tradtion of mine

  1. Name all 10 reindeer
  2. Name the popular holiday song that’s from a musical based on a classic holiday movie
2a) name the musical and composer
    2b) name the classic movie
If they go unanswered thru the end of the week, I’ll post them again in the new MMP with the answers

The reindeer:
Dasher
Dancer
Prancer
Vixen
Comet
Cupid
Donner
Blitzen
Rudolph
Al, the other Reindeer

  1. Silver Bells
2a partial) Irving Berlin was the composer
2b) The Bells of St. Mary’s

Well, he showed you. Yikes, all right though, anyrose had a good idea. Let’s come up with a few holiday questions we can try to stump each other with.

How’s this for a stumper? What was the one thing I asked for this year? It’s nothing memento-ish, My Dad can buy it off Amazon easily.

Hah, answer this!

The office party at my old employer (I am former NASA, for you newbs) was a hoot. I had a great time seeing people I haven’t rubbed elbows with for a year. My old project, the robotic airplane, is a success.

I counted 6 jaws hitting the floor and 2 who didn’t even recognize the new, svelte me…

WOOHOO Bobbio! So, did you get any phone numbers? Potential new stalkers? Hit on?

sweetums the answer is soooooo obvious. It just has to be this. I mean who wouldn’t want one!

Hit on - no. :frowning:

Phone numbers - sorta. I’m planning on having a pig picking come spring, and the old cow-orkers are invited. Also, one of the PhDs who had an office across the hall from mine is related to half of the Mayberry VFD, and he’s down there on a semi-regular basis. We’re going to take our wives to the local BBQ joint sometime when he’s there.

No stalkers  There’s a couple of cutiepies that I’d let stalk me, however.
