Things that infuriate you well beyond their actual importance

I’m absolutely not going to say it didn’t make it harder for anyone , but although my city’s meters take coins, credit cards or the app, the app is by far the easiest/best for me. I don’t have to make sure have have enough quarters every day. It doesn’t rely on the meter, so there isn’t any issue of it refusing my coins or having a problem with my credit card. The app notifies me that my time is going to expire soon and if I didn’t pay for the maximum amount of time, I can add time without returning to the car. I would absolutely get the app for a few days, even if I didn’t need to.

Your meters are different than ours, then. It’s “App-only” down here in Ft Myers.

On the subject of things being removed from houses: our new house was tenant-occupied before we bought it, and they were … not great (we looked them up on CaseNet at some point and they have like four pages of lawsuits, including by the guy who owned the house and rented to them for damage that they did that we insisted he fix). They took all the curtain rods. Curtain rods are fixtures, attached to the house, which are supposed to stay with the house. We probably could have made a fuss, but the move was already stressful enough.

But the weirdest one was our previous house that we bought in 2005. The owner was quite meticulous about furnace maintenance and kept a detailed record of every filter change, fuse change, service call, whatever taped to the side of the furnace. He took it with him.

We didn’t get an ILC (Improvement Location Certificate) when we bought our house. Weird to me.

Any way, I contacted the realtor (nice person) and it looks like I would have to get a Google Cloud account to get it. I don’t have a Google Cloud account. Don’t want one. She tried again, same thing.

I say: “Just download it yourself and send it from your computer.” OK. Well, she had a coworker do it.

I FINALLY get it.

For. The. Wrong. House.

I swear I’m gonna start charging by the hour.

My phone can’t download any apps it didn’t come with.

I guess I can’t park in your town. Probably not in some others, either.

My vet moved to a new location recently. Their office has an attached parking garage. When you enter the garage, a sign tells you to call a number to get the gate to open. Fine, I did that. Then when you leave, it tells you to call a number again to get out. So I call and it texts me a URL to use to enter my credit card information to pay for the parking. While my car is sitting at the gate. There was, AFAICT, no way to enter this information before you are actually at the gate and trying to leave. Luckily there was no one behind me also trying to get out, or I would felt really stressed.

I added a new station on Pandora for RavenLore today.

I’ve been listening for an hour and have yet to hear anything by RavenLore.

Hello YouTube playlist.

A lot of driving infuriations are well deserved because driving is dangerous, but one that has been annoying me lately beyond its actual importance are major surface roads whose lights only let but a few cars through at a time before they switch back to let the minor road have a green.

If there is a backup of like 20 cars, I can understand not getting through on the first green. And if there aren’t any cars at all, then I simply mistimed the light. But if the line is only like 4 deep, I should still be able to time the light so that I don’t have to come to a stop and thus save on gas and brakes. But soooo many times in the past couple of weeks, I’ve been approaching as the fifth car at a light that just turned green, only to get stopped by a red just before I catch up to the rest of the pack. I would have only gone through if I had inefficiently punched the gas until I came to a stop behind the last car.

And this never works in my favor. The other two situations happen to me. Most of the time I’m on a minor road, it rightfully lets boatloads of cars go through the major road. And occasionally I come upon a red whose intersection isn’t actively in use and it changes right away for me and stops the other cars. But I can’t remember the last time I come upon a red and it only lets 4 or so cars through and then changes for me.

This has happened to me twice this summer…once in June, and again this morning. Both times were at funerals of good friends.

Both funerals followed pretty much the same script: a welcome and a prayer by the pastor, then a congregational hymn, then the reading of the obituary, then a memory shared by a family member, and another hymn. Then, both times, the pastor stood up to speak. What should have been a celebration of the life and memories of the deceased quickly morphed into a long-winded sermon about how we should all seek the Lord and confess our sins and become saved so we can join the dearly-departed in heaven. And both times the sermon lasted over 30 minutes.

I quit listening after about 10 minutes, and I’m certain many other attendees did the same. Dammit, this was a gathering to celebrate the life of and mourn the loss of the guy in the urn, not a revival meeting.

Unfortunately, I’m at the age when these occasions will become more and more common.

Not a big Star Trek fan, it’s OK. But all I want is “He’s dead Jim” Then on to the party.

Absolutely. I live ( suffer through ) this one intersection on my inbound work commute. 45 mph limit.

Beginning the past 6-8 weeks, the light timing scheme has shifted, and I can see it a half mile ahead and I’ve been keenly observing its workings. The default routing is that the minor road ( a subdivision entrance ) gets green, and then every minute the major road gets about 4 seconds of green. As you note, anybody more than 4 or 5 vehicles back is not going to make it through…and that’s assuming everyone isn’t daydreaming or playing with their electronics. I’ve been approaching the light, often barely a 200 feet away, see it turn green, then BAM! Red. Green is always stale, but red never is.

Funny thing is, at night, it’s the exact opposite: The major road gets default green and stays that way until a vehicle approaching on the minor road triggers a red for the major road, which then is for barely a few seconds. In daylight I swear it’s almost as if it’s a deliberate heavy-handed move by traffic planners to keep traffic on the major road all bunched up and moving slowly because they feel it’s “safer”. I’ll harbor this CT until I see otherwise.

An intersection near our house has a left-turn green on the main road, and we at least 90% of the time turn left there. Usually only three cars get to turn on the green light, though occasionally a fourth (or even fifth) car will follow them through after the left-turn signal turns red.

I recently had to change the SSID (name) of my home network. Updating all the IOT devices to join the new network was a pain in the ass, but then I found that my two security cameras were offline, and the only way to fix that is to actually unscrew them from the house and take them down.

So annoying.

I think I have good reason to be infuriated. But I want to run it by you guys.

We live in a nice suburban neighborhood. Behind our house is a 1.25 acre dog park. I take my dogs there every few days, or otherwise walk them (they have a big yard).

But the park is fun for them.

Twice in three days I was denied entry by a… woman that said that since she had three dogs, my two more where too many and I can’t come in. There are NO rules about the number of dogs for the park.

The kicker is as I was about to enter, the woman that yelled at me was behind me and not yet in the park. She told me to leave.

I took my dogs home, and confronted her that there are no rules about that, she doesn’t make the rules. And she started yelling at me.

I think this person is very disturbed, and I wrote the board for the subdivision. The head of the board is my friend and next door neighbor.

I’m more than a little angry. I can use binoculars to see if this… woman is in the park. I want to go early and not allow her to enter.

I think we’re all tired of getting a survey after literally every transaction, but this takes the cake: I just got back to work after a week long vacation. Shortly after I logged onto my computer, a popup appeared in the lower right corner of my screen, asking “How satisfied are you with your IT environment?”

You have good reason to be infuriated.

Your best bet is to let your friend on the board write a stern letter to her confirming that she isn’t allowed to bar other residents from the park.

Well, I wouldn’t try to prevent her from entering, just tell her she’s not the queen of the dog park and bring your dogs in. But yes, some busybody telling you that you can’t use a public service you’re entitled to is worth being infuriated.

It wasn’t Yoga Pants, was it?

I only know her first name. I told the board that. The name is common enough that it would be hard to puzzle out.

I told my wife I’m gonna get there early, and not let her in. My wife said, no, invite her in. Reverse psychology all the way. I’ll just say that I’m not going to sit near you though (I’ll leave off the ‘You psychotic asshole’ part though).

My dogs did me proud though. When she first said I couldn’t enter, I called my dogs and had them sit by side and stay ($4k of training paid off). Then I told my dogs LOUDLY, that we are not welcome here.

Yeah. Twice. I’m a bit stunned. I could probably figure out who she is, but now we are in stalking territory, so I would never do that. I’ll see what the board says. But I doubt they have any teeth.

Thanks all.

Your wife is right.
