I sleep on a floor mat. Everybody seems to find it amazing that someone does not sleep in a bed. I don’t even own a bed.
I’ve kept a daily diary from the day I turned eight. I’ve yet to meet anyone under thirty who wants to do this, or over forty that doesn’t wish thay had done it.
I don’t blat it around, it’s a ‘family secret’, but I sleep on my (overstuffed, super- comfy) couch every night. There are a few reasons for this that I won’t get into, but everyone assumes the “proper” sleeping arrangement is for a married couple to sleep naked and intertwined on a a massive king bed. I, being a rebel, spit in the face of propriety!
I don’t know how astonishing it is, but as long as we are bringing sleeping habits into it…I cannot* fall asleep without a television on (or television on my laptop if TV is not available) so I leave the TV on every night, and I typically sleep for only 3 or 4 hours per night on weeknights.
Most people are shocked to learn that, if not completely astounded.
*This is not entirely true, as I have been known to fall asleep without a TV, but it is only after I am totally exhausted (wakeful for more than 24-30 hours for example) and I have horrible nightmares if I fall asleep this way.
But the one thing that clearly astonishes people, based on reaction/feedback: I never let my shoe laces touch the ground. If I untie and remove my shoes, I pull the laces such that they cannot dangle onto the floor.
Uh, dude - I’m not a doctor, but maybe you should talk to one? As I understand it, frequent urination can be a sign of diabetes, prostate problems, or other assorted unpleasantness.
I get 4 children up, feed them breakfast and see that they get to school… 4 different schools. No biggie. People act like it must be some earth-shatteringly difficult chore, but it’s pretty easy. They know the score, what to do and how much time they have. 2 bike to school and 2 take school buses.
But everyone is like, “You’re kids go to 4 different schools?!?!?!?! Oh my god! How do you manage!!!”
I don’t do anything astonishing, but I do have to have a fan running when I sleep, and if the power goes out I wake up because the fan goes off. I find it difficult to sleep in a silent room, and when I was staying in a hotel a few months ago I found a white noise website and had it on all night.
I can touch my nose with my tongue, but I don’t do it every day.
Some people are amazed that we let our dogs sleep in our bed with us. For others, its a “me too” moment. We have 3 - 15-22 lbs for all of them, and they love to crowd 'round their mama, so it gets a bit “crowdity” in bed, especially on my side. On the plus side, I am never cold at night, cause its always a three dog night at Otternell’s!
I go for hour-long walks in -30ºC weather. Heck, it seems like people are astonished that I walk outside in -5ºC weather - I barely need a jacket for that. And once I’ve been walking really fast for long enough, I open my jacket to let my extra body heat escape. People look at me funny then, but honestly, if I was cold, I’d have my jacket done up, don’t you think?
Is eight really all that much? I think these days I’m urinating less than that but I think I used to urinate around that amount when I was younger. I guess I had a little bladder.
Some people think it’s weird that I listen to so much of the same music obsessively. I probably listen to some version (i.e., different live versions) of Be My Baby by the Ronettes/Ronnie Spector every day…a not huge number might be ten to fifteen times each day. So, more than I pee.
I sleep with earplugs every night. My husband snores a little and the siding on the house squeaks… but I’d wear them anyway because I sleep so much more deeply with them in than with them out. I credit them with curing my insomnia.
AO Safety’s pale green ones do the best job of blocking noise for the most comfortable fit.
LOL I have been doing that for years as well…never even thought of it as particularly unusual. Now that my oldest is no longer in school and my second to oldest is in college (and I do get him breakfasted and out the door each morning but don’t have to) I feel like I am getting away with something because I only have 3 schools to think about.
Reading others’ lists though I guess I am a pretty astounding individual anyway though. I pee at least 10 times a day, probably much more often (no health problems I just drink a lot; and what goes in, must come out) I haven’t eaten breakfast (with the exception of rare and/or special occasions) since childhood, most days I don’t eat lunch either.
I have a 114 pound dog that I fight with for the covers at night because he sleeps with us- sometimes pushing me out of the bed altogether. He is the reason I can never have anything but a king size bed- and if there was a larger size readily available I would upgrade to it. My cat sleeps in bed with us too.
I walk with my dog at least twice a day no matter what the weather (though the coldest so far has been 5 degrees F) for about 45 minutes to an hour each time.
And here is one that is a little different but probably not surprising to anyone with a large family…I do at least one load of laundry every single day.
I tried sleeping with earplugs for a while, and I was astonished at what a difference they made in the quality of my sleep - instead of waking up every couple of hours, I slept straight through. I’ve stopped using them because they’re so damned hard to get in my ears properly - I suspect I’ve inherited my mom’s small ear canals.
Some people are amazed that we let our puppy sleep under the covers with us. He’s very cold natured and likes to be snuggly warm, so I don’t see it as a big deal as long as I change the sheets often.
I take two buses and two trains to get to work. This shocks the hell out of many people I know, who can’t even imagine taking one bus or train to work. The whole commute takes around an hour, give or take 15 minutes depending on if SEPTA feels like keeping to its schedule. I don’t mind it, except during extreme weather conditions. I can get reading and schoolwork done, or even a nap. I’ve been doing the commute for so long that my body knows when to wake up before I miss my stop.
I haven’t been doing this for very long, but I’ve been baking bread nearly every day for myself. I’m working on getting up a couple hours earlier so that I can have a freshly baked loaf for lunch that day.
