Things you like that everyone else seems to hate

The “your topic is similar to…” message actually listed a thread on the exact same topic from July '02, but I figure it’s best to start a new thread rather than bumping a 19 year old one.

  • Air travel. It’s not that I tolerate it because I enjoy traveling (although I do enjoy traveling). I genuinely like flying. I mean, airplanes are cool. Especially if I can get a flight on a type of plane I’ve never been on before. Although you might say I tolerate the security checkpoint because you have to go through it to get to the actual flying part.

  • Doing my taxes. I enjoy filling out the forms and figuring out what itemized deductions I can take. I am strongly opposed to that idea Republicans were pushing a few years ago that you should be able to submit your tax return on a post card.

Being alone.

I used to passionately love flying, too - even cried when I was 4 and had to get OFF an airplane after the flight - but its shine has worn off now.

I like pineapple on pizza, wearing socks inside sandals, and doing laundry.

Disco music. I’m listening to Clio’s “Faces” as I write this. And I loooove Rick Astley, the Bee Gees, etc.

For me it depends on how you define “doing laundry”. I like the part where you put the clothes in the machine and turn it on. But I hate folding them and putting them away.

Underwood Deviled Ham on toasted cocktail rye bread.

Hiking or walking alone. Well, I usually take my dog with me, but I’m still alone. I listen to music or podcasts and enjoy being out on my own for a few hours. I live in Montana, so there are lots of places to hike near me.

Flip phone.

We use smartphones at a business I own because we routinely need to look up orders and parts and such online. But I hate them. Big and clunky. Need a holster to carry it.

My personal phone is just a simple Straight Talk flip phone. Small and portable, it fits comfortably in my shirt or pants pocket. Yet folks always rag on me for it. “OMG, can you call the past on that thing?”

WTH do you care what kind of phone I like?

I really enjoy grocery shopping. All that delicious food, and I get to take it home!

My wife thinks I’m a weirdo.

I don’t like cleaning in general, but I do like when you are cleaning something really dusty and with a single wipe you can see the difference. It makes me feel so satisfied that the fruits of my labor are immediate and tangible!

And then I found out, while it seems that everyone hates cleaning in general, a lot of people feel the same way about it as I do.

The Bee Gees, John Denver and The Captain and Tennille.

I like Nickelback’s first couple albums.

You might be interested in a new video “game” on Steam: PowerWash Simulator in which you can power wash a house. A helicopter. A moon rover.

I can’t promise there will be a sale in the next 4 to 6 weeks, but odds are decent. As you may know, if you add it to your wishlist you’d get an email if it goes on sale.

I’m with you if I can change the first one to Non-disco Bee Gees.

Turkish Delight.

Housecleaning. But everyone needs to get the hell out of my way, and not destroy it as soon as they get back!

Salads and vegetables. Except okra, which is disgusting of course.

What Not to Wear. You have your trashy TV show, I have mine.

I grew up listening to John Denver, while my folks were driving from Las Cruces NM to Leadville CO (for various reasons, we did this probably twice a year for almost a decade). I always loved it, and kept loving John Denver as an adult. In fact, I suspect that if you could get most people to be honest, they do like JD. His music is lovely and heartfelt - the worst you can normally say is that it’s also overly simple and sentimental.

People say that dislike John Denver, but they’re saying that because they don’t want to be judged.

Of course, I can say all these things since we’re in IMHO, and need not prove my hypothesis.

I also second @Left_Hand_of_Dorkness - grocery shopping is the best chore of the week (normally), I spend the whole time trying to figure out what I want to make based on what’s on sale at the store. Sometimes I think I have more fun thinking about what fun a dish will be than I do eating said dish.

Lastyly, Stouffer’s Macaroni and Cheese. Everyone else I know goes totally cheap (Kraft Mac and Cheese) or Gourmet varieties, but for me, the old red/orange boxed stuff is the best. Microwave for 5 minutes, then finish in a toaster oven to get nice browning, top with a few grinds of black pepper or (if going the distance!) real bacon crumbles.

It is my ultimate comfort food, but people stare at me with judging eyes…

Farts. I can’t smell them, and they make such a silly noise!

Barry Manilow. The songs suck, but his voice and his face were so, so beautiful.

Liver. I’ll eat your share if you don’t want it.

I lived and love liver sausage - but once I discovered what a liver is, nope.

Math. So much so that I got my degrees in it and teach it for a living.

Opera.

And operetta. NOBODY else loves operetta.
