A very close relative works with Beck on a daily basis. She claims that this is indeed true - he’s actually a very likable guy, who doesn’t believe a word he says. It’s all scripted for him. I questioned her about Beck’s books, and she said they’re scripted as well.
ETA - she didn’t tell me he laughs at his audience. From what she’s said, this is just a job for him - albeit a very lucrative job.

The real reason many colleges and universities torture students with a foreign language requirment is simply because the professors are still pissed they had to put up with that horse s**t when they were undergrads. Since they can’t get even with the people that actually inflicted it on them they’re taking their wrath on the only available target, current undergrads.
I don’t find this hard to believe at all, and they are most likely joined in their support for the USA’s neo-prohibition by the vast majority of people employed by the criminal justice system, as non-violent illegal drug offenders are the bread and butter of the corrections industry.
Hundreds of thousands of Americans would be out of work if all drugs were legalized, and all non-violent drug offenders were cut loose from prisons, jails and parole/probation obligations.
People just like you and me are capable of unspeakable evil under some circumstances.
