You may not choose to believe this, but I don’t have anything against Lobsang as a person or poster. I honestly and truly was pitting the type of thread, not any one person directly. Which is why I did not say anything about Lobsang as a poster, but merely said that it was threads like those that keep me from reading MPSIMS regularly. And it’s also why, no matter who said what, I tried very hard to remain civil to you, Sol, and Deb (the main three detractors that I converesed with). I don’t know if I succeeded, but I sincerely hope I did.

Is that all the excuse I need to Pit someone? No, but then I have never started a pit thread to flame a Doper. But I do not have a problem posting to one if I think I have something to say. And sometimes even when I don’t.

I certainly hope that by posting the opinion that I get annoyed by the type of thread Lobsang posted that you think I was calling Lobsang an “insecure fuck-up with suicidal tendencies”. Because I wasn’t, and I certainly don’t think that way. I don’t believe anyone else did either - though I’ll admit that I skimmed a lot of the one liner posts. If I had seen someone say that, I would have have defended him from that kind of sentiment. Just as I posted in your defense when someone accused you of needing to step away from the keyboard (wrt laserkitty posts). Just because someone is on the opposite side of an issue as me, doesn’t mean that I go balls out vicious - that is not my style at all.

I do appreciate that you expect better of me as your opinion does count with me, but I really do not understand why this thread raises your ire so much, when I’ve seen threads time and again that (to me) are far more brutal than this one ever was.

Would it have been better if Demo had said that it wasn’t any one post that was the subject, but merely his impression of posts of this nature? Sure, yes it would have. But the Pit rules have changed since Hama posted her thread - you no longer can post parody threads without linking to the thread that spawned the Pit thread. No matter how or what Demo said, people would have wanted a link, and someone would have provided one.

While I don’t agree with OxyMoron’s twisting of Lobsang’s name, I do agree with him and Slacker when they say that this is what the Pit is for: calling out behaviour you don’t like, or that annoys you. It’s also for people to come in and vehemently disagree, as you did with Demo.

Yes, it was! OxyMoron, the poster I quoted, kept going on about the “whining MPSIMS shit” and suggested we get rid of MPSIMS. Several people have made derisive comments about {{{hugs}}} and smileys (including myself) as being too cutesy and for pussies. Before this nonsense, there have been several other threads from MPSIMS about various topics that have gotten taken to the Pit and had people piss all over not just the thread, but the very idea that someone would go to that forum and put their personal baggage out there. And anybody who defends them gets called a pussy or gets made fun of for making smiley-hearts and birthday cakes.

I’m sad and confused and this thread is making my teeth hurt!

Actually, I do not belittle community - I’ve found quite a bit here. In point of fact, one thing that communities do is give people slaps upside the head when they’re being whiny and solipsistic. Communities are not support groups.

But even supposing that what people want is a safe online place to reveal their neuroses, that’s fine - but that’s a blog. Want to make sure that the only people who comment are those who will hold your hand and tell you how extra-special-wonderful you are? Get a blog, they’ve ways you can do that. And blogging is now where many of us in this thread spend more of our “social” online time.

“Social” ignorance is not something that I find particularly important to fight - it’s fighting public, factual ignorance that is the core of this message board. The more I think about it, the more I think this board really would be better off minus MPSIMS, which has outlived its usefulness. There are SDMB-themed communities in LiveJournal - that should really be the new MPSIMS.
