Wow, loved this episode. Full of win with a side helping of awesome.
Disagree that the prison was a mistake. Even with Herschel’s bite, they are safer than they’ve been in months based on the quickie expository backstory they gave while looking at the maps.
On the Talking Dead last night, the writer said: (spoilered explanation for this episode, not future episodes)
…the group had an idea that if somebody gets bitten in an extremeity, maybe if they chop it off quickly they wouldn’t die. Since everyone turns on death it’s not like the bite is a “zombie sentence” anyway. It’s just a matter of not dying, so may as well try to amputate.
In the writer’s mind, this was actually Herschel’s idea. And they carry a special medical kit just for this purpose. Namely, a clean hatchet they don’t use in fights to chop the bitten limb off.
Dying. It’s the only thing that turns you into a walker, and every single person who dies will turn so there are zero restrictions on having to die by bite or scratch.
A bite turns you into a walker only insofar as a bite will quickly kill you, one assumes from infection.

Yup - and a bite means very bad infection, brought on by “the fever”. Remember how paranoid the father and son were of Rick having a fever that we met waaaay back in season 1 (episode 1 or 2)?
Ugh. I didn’t realize there was an episode thread for the first episode until just now when I stumbled on it. If that’s the reaction this episode just got, I’ll go ahead and take a pass on the episode threads this season.
I didn’t watch the season preview and maybe they did something there, but it would have been nice to see an ~ 2 minute montage of what happened between the end of last season and the beginning of this season.
Still, I give his episode a solid “B”, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.
You mean like the cold open which wordlessly explains exactly how these people have lived their lives since the last we saw them? Or the scene right after the opening credits where they explain it with words for the less observant viewers?
