Thirteen a lucky number?

I’m sure everyone has heard the superstition that thirteen is an unlucky number. But I thought I read somewhere that in some religions 13 is a number of power or is otherwise lucky.

  1. Is 13 considered by some to be a “lucky number”?

  2. Where did 13 get its reputation for ill fortune?

(Note: Spartan School of Aeronautics’s logo is a black cat and the number 13, signifying “knowledge and skill overcome superstition and blind luck.”)

13 is my lucky number - for several reasons:

~ I was born on the 13th
~ During my childhood I lived off Exit 13 on the Belt Parkway.
~Currently I live off Exit 13 on the Staten Island Expressway
~ When I gamble (which is rare obviously, since I’m broke all the time) I play 13 and win in both Roulette or Quick Draw (a keno-like game televised in bars and restaurants in New York)
~ I met my husband on the 13th
~ At work, the staff schedules (both the weekly and saturday) my name is in the 13th cell.

As for why it is considered unlucky, there are many theories but you have better luck sending me some cash to play the roulette wheel.

I just saw a show about Mary Kay Cosmetics. Mary Kay’s lucky number was 13 and her headquarters has 13 floors. And she is (was) a bazillionaire!!

Jewish boys have their bar mitzvas at 13, and while I wouldn’t call it a lucky number in Judaism, it’s certainly not considered bad in any way.

13 is also my lucky number. In fact, my whole family has kind of adopted it as their lucky number. I was born on the 13th, my dad was born on the 13th, and my sister was DUE on the 13th, but came a few hours early on the 12th.

You can see the the 13 is used by a lot of venezuelan shortstops in the Major Leagues. In fact, David Concepción was the one that first used it and eliminated the “myth” (correct me if I’m wrong). If getting to the Hall Of Fame is bad luck…

I mean, eliminated the “myth” that using it (as the personal number in the back of an uniform) was of bad luck.
