In other news: I managed to get my mouse control back! Woohoo! 
I took one of my brother’s old mice (but sitll workable), and spent at least 10 minutes getting the old one out of all the wirds (had to resort to cutting it at the last), and making sure the new one was plugged in. Now, I can post with my customary abandon. Definitely will keep the keyboard shortcuts and tips in mind though.
