Actually, in the sticky, Jerry said the only way to track down problems is under load, so we need to post even more if he is to make any progress.

Yes and no; yes, it was bad - to the point of being unusable - for me earlier. But it’s been improving rapidly.
I can state with reasonable confidence that Jerry is not working on this right now. It’s 11pm on a Tuesday night. He’s sound alseep.

The board seems to be struggle for about an hour or so, timing out and generally sucking, then come to life for 20 minutes, then fall off a cliff again. Its been this way all day.
So, why do we need to stop posting then?
It’s just a recommendation. I think it’ll help things get done faster. Start tomorrow morning if it’ll make you feel better.
It seems to be pretty stable (and quick) right now. I would surmise that the up-and-down-ness has been Jerry futzing with the server.
The Straight Dope Message Board has been moved to the new server. Until we update the DNS entry for the message board you can access it at its temporary URL of http://boardstest.straightdope.com/sdmb/.
The explanation about coming to boardtest.straightdope.com until they update the DNS doesn’t make sense. “straightdope.com” is the domain name. “Boards” and “boardtest” that come between “http://” and “straightdope” are LOCAL hostnames. You don’t have to do anything but tell your config file where to go and restart the server. The registered domain name has nothing to do with it.
I guess I’ll stand up and take the face punch. We are getting the upgrades that we bitched and moaned for years about being promised and not getting. You’ve been patient for months, so be a grown up and be patient for a couple more days. We’ll all join in the bitchfest if it doesn’t get better in a reasonable time, but this is far too early for it.
That’s a fair point, more or less. I’ll counter that a) I see little (okay, no) new things that I care about that have been upgraded, and b) the one thing I do care about – board stability and performance – has gotten much worse.
You’re probably right, but I’ve been patient for years – freaking years – and things have gotten very very marginally better in all that time. They’re pretty much sucking today, and I’m in little mood to be patient. This was a planned upgrade, they rolled it out carefully… and its so far a disaster. Maybe things will be better in a couple of days, but I do pay a fee to be here and we’re on the third upgrade that I can recall and I’d like to think that at some point someone would actually get competent at upgrading the goddamn board!
So people are still getting the poor board performance that existed this afternoon? Because I’ve been using this board for the past two hours and it’s been running perfectly normally. I thought whatever was causing the timeouts and such had been fixed.

I agree - I still see ads, but it’s working much better today. I feel bad for the mods sometime. I’m totally addicted to the Straight Dope and get edgy when I can’t get my fix.
Some time outs, but when it works, it’s snappy.
I’ve tried 3 times in the past two days to post, only to be left with a blank screen and innumerable timeouts lasting a long-ass time. :mad:
