On 4 April, NPR will embark on an essay project, the likes of which has not been seen since 1951, spurred by Edward R. Murrow. I’ll start, welcoming other dopers to contribute.
The education of my daughter is the responsibility of her school system and teachers only in part. I must shoulder the remainder of that burden by ensuring that her homework is done, that areas in which she has difficulty are addressed at home, so the rest of the class isn’t held back. Beyond that, my duty extends to directing her away from video games and time consuming pursuits which don’t help her to grow intellectually. It is also my responsibility to expose her to art and literature deemed inappropriate by the school system.
Everyone has a duty to their community. Paying taxes is not enough. Volunteering puts you in touch with your neighbors, and is the fundamental responsibility of every resident. Even if you can’t ride an ambulance or fire truck, you can likely help your local emergency services organization or your municipality. Volunteer positions are available, but must be sought- they won’t come out to bite you.
We should all know why we believe, whether that be a religious or political position. A party or theological adherance is inadequate without substantiation. We must also have the ability to accept that others may not share our views and respect them along with their difference of opinion.
This I Believe.
