I was just watching a local news channel where there was a commentary on the security of America’s Northern Borders and how it’s really not “secure” at all. The commentary came from this article on the MSNBC website.
So if we know terrorists aern’t stupid (I’d have to disagree), then why aern’t we doing something about that now?
Hmmm…2004. That’s only a year and a half away, we should be fine until then.
So your going to feel silly if a terrorist makes it through the border, bombs LAX and kills hundreds of innocent people? This is the “Homeland Security” we are all depending on to keep us safe?? It seems more like a big joke than a security system to me.
Everyone keeps complaining about the unprotected Canadian border as if the Canadians are willingly allowing terrorists into their country for the sole purpose of sneaking into the U.S… aren’t there policing forces in Canada?
There are. Our RCMP (better known as the “mounties”) have been making arrests of suspected terrorists. Most recently, here in Montreal, Amine Mezbar was arrested for conspiring to blow up the US embassy in Paris. He was a wanted man in the Netherlands, so we extradited him there.
Of course, these things take time. Only a police state can bring its criminals (and many other people besides) quickly to court. Canadians believe in due process.
Security at the border has been traditionally lax, which is the only reason Canada has been the main point of entry for terrorists to the United States. It’s certainly easier to get in by way of Canada than by Mexico.
We’ve done a lot to help, but there are limits to what we’re willing to accept. That “security perimeter” idea represented a loss of sovreignty for many of us. So tightening up security at your end of the border is probably the best idea.
We’re spinning our wheels and wasting tremendous amounts of money on something we really don’t have much control over, anyway…this whole thing is just a money grab by the military-cop-spook axis, using our fears for leverage.
I, for one, would feel a lot more safe and secure if our economy was getting the attention our CIA-blowback-driven terrorist threat is. And if we wouldn’t base our economy on the performance of the casino/confidence scam that is Wall Street we’d probably have a better time of it, as well…
"Security at the border has been traditionally lax, which is the only reason Canada has been the main point of entry for terrorists to the United States. "
I hate to say it but “cite please”. All this about most terrorists coming through Canada is not just misleading it is false. I believe most of the 9/11 terrorists came through England and Germany and noone’s crying about their security measures. This is just another excuse to push through more poorly directed security funding in Canada to help build Fortress North America™. Sounds like a nice cozy place to live.
You’re right – I don’t have a cite. This has been the almost-unanimous conclusion of most of my news sources, but given the state of journalistic objectivity in Canada these days, I should be taking what I read with a grain of salt.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the “Canada as a haven or terrorists” thing was a myth, and if you have citations to the contrary, I’d be glad to read them. The Fortress North America idea scares me, too.
As for lax security at the border, I’m only going anecdotally. I’ve almost never been asked for even my birth certificate. Of course, the last time I crossed in was before Sept. 11.
