I asked them nicely to cut it out, and they didn’t bother. Big deal - I’m not pitting any of them. I’m not pitting samclem, for that matter.
Just expressing confusion at a barb directed at me for disregaring medical OPINIONS that I didn’t ask for being tossed at me on a message board.
BTW - I’m about as outraged as I was when I discovered that they put a new kind of marshmallow in my Lucky Charms. That is to say, not at all.
Why did I close the thread? Because I felt that no further purpose would be served by any bickering between the OP and the posters. I could have given out mild warnings to all involved and left it open, but I try to not do that unless something major is going on. And it wasn’t.
Who was the real-life doctor who gave an opinion in that thread? That would be KarlGauss in post #15.
Did the thread involve Medical Advice? Not in the sense that I close threads. I close threads when the OP asks for opinions or advice about their specific medical problem, especially if a pressing problem. That was not the case here.
I didn’t see the posters offering the OP medical advice. I saw them offering information that appeared on the surface to be factual, but they weren’t telling her to throw away her crutches and trust Jesus and walk. And they didn’t bring this up out of thin air. The OP brought up the information her doctor had given her. All I saw was some reasonably intelligent posters asking some questions and offering some information.
Shayna is incorrect in saying that CurtC was the one who brought up the question that shall not be named. It was Earl Snake-Hips Tucker in post #8. CurtC echoed that in post #9.
Medical threads are OK, if you don’t ask for a personal diagnosis of a current potentially serious problem. Them I shut down. If you choose to “eschew actual medical advice” and trust advice you get on the internet, then you’re fucked. But if you aren’t bright enough to at least weigh medical cites you get and weigh them against your physicians words(assuming you gave them correctly in your OP), and perhaps take that information to your physician the next time you talk to her, no one is gonna die because you didn’t. But I would think you should have the intellectual curiosity to find out the truth, assuming it exists.

Well, I wasn’t actully concerned about why you closed the thread - my actual question had been answered so there was really no need for it to stay open anymore, particularly since people were insisting on having a conversation with me that I wasn’t interested in having.
Furthermore, I might very well mention it to my Dr. next time I see her just because of intelectual curiosity, but I’m sure not going to make an appointment just for that, which is what one well meaning (I’m sure) person suggested that I do.
Finally, thank you for responding - like I said, this isn’t a pit of you (so you don’t get to count it in the Mod Pit taly) - I just thought your post was really…odd.

I’m sorry you took it as a post criticizing you. I didn’t really mean it that way. Perhaps if I had more time, I might have phrased things better. Some mods are brilliant and can post wonderful stuff from the hip. I’m not as eloquent as someone like tomndebb, and quite often have to re-write my posts multiple times. Hopefully, no harm, no foul.

Again, bullshit. Earl Snake-Hips Tucker only asked what was already pretty plain in the OP; whether a doctor had told her about the connection. He then went on to state that he couldn’t find anything to support the contention, but admitted he wasn’t a doctor and left it at that. That post didn’t send the thread off in a direction not intended by the OP – that honor goes to CurtC for being the one to demand a cite.
The ridiculous gymnastics you have to contort yourself into to justify the absurd admonition you made when you closed that thread is stunning. And also bullshit, seeing as how, if “no one’s gonna die” because alice didn’t choose to “at least weigh medical cites. . . and take that information to [her] physician,” then there was really no fucking reason to chastise her for daring to be so stupid as to not listen to medical advice she never even fucking asked for.
