This Is Us: Season 4

NO, there’s always been ties allowed in the NFL, they are just very rare. There is a set amount of time for OT and if no one scores during set time, the game ends in a tie.

Huh. It happened this year, between the Lions and the Cardinals, 27-27. We watch mostly college football in the IvyAbode, where they play until someone wins, I believe.

Correction, I looked it up and I was wrong, the game that was used on the show was from Nov 27, 1969 and it was the last season before the AFL NFL merger so the rules were different. The game ended in a regulation tie with no OT.

But, regardless, Nicky was given a point spread which Dallas did not cover so that is why he won the bet.

I thought the same thing. I thought the fast food worker was going to say something like, “Wait, don’t I know you from school?”

And this isn’t the first time I’ve seen in TV or movies a fast food drive-though shown with a clown head to order from. But I’ve never seen that in real life. Is there a real-world fast food chain that uses a clown head?

As for that, the phone screen said the message came from someone in his “Crossfit Group”, so I don’t think it was a co-worker. Perhaps it’s all a massive fake-out but the show is definitely suggesting that Kate and Toby end up divorced.

But that’s not how football betting works. You either get odds, or you get points. Not both. Unless the bookie was completely stupid. Of course, thinking about it now, maybe that’s why Jack was so surprised he got points.

If it was a group text, then the “don’t let her get you down” text might not have been about KATE. It could have been about someone else’s female family member. I mean, if you’ve been on a group chat, there’s always one person who responds to an individual text out of sync with the rest.

And it doesn’t mean that the person has the right sense of their dynamic and is projecting. But the big point is that Kate is going to flip out. And you know what? If she gives him a chance to explain, that’s ok. It goes back to what Bethany said about if you’re not discussing your marriage with your spouse but instead with other people, it makes things worse. As a survivor of a terrible marriage, talking to others about your spouse CAN be really bad for the relationship.

(Like if you’re terribly immature and the person you’re talking to is toxic and unhelpful, it becomes an unfixable feedback loop that might contribute to your eventual divorce, for example.)

Jack in the Box used to, back when I was a kid. Not sure if they still do. (We don’t have any around here.)

I assumed the Randall thing might be an upcoming blow-up about him not telling Kevin and Kate anything about mama’s issues but with this show who knows? This could be about something they’ve never mentioned even once. He didn’t seem bothered at all about his daughter and Kevin.

The Kate Toby thing just gets more annoying as it goes. Nobody gets that upset over missing first solid food. He knows he’s spending a lot of time at the gym so it’s his own damned fault anyway. He’ll probably end up seeking solace with another crossfitter when Baby Jack has his first bite of cashew cheese and Kate will be upset because it’s a potential allergen and she’ll run to Stroke Guy. Kate is nothing but “oh but I’m fat” to me. That’s all this character is about. I’m nearly her size and I see far more to my own life. She could be so much more than this. The actor is good. It’s just a crap character.

I thought the exact same thing. I thought he was going to break down laughing and say something like “Come on Kate, it’s fine. Nobody would get that upset over missing first solid food” It just seemed like something his character would do. When he didn’t, I was annoyed. I hope the writers are not starting to inject out-of-character behavior just to introduce drama :frowning:

Unfortunately I know many people IRL who act the same way, male and female. They do nothing to improve themselves, which is their right, but then they mock or shame people who do try to eat healthy and work out.

As for Kate and Toby, I don’t like how she does not support his desire to be healthy, she resents it. And that would drive anyone away.

And I also find it odd that Miguel seems so clueless about Rebecca’s memory issues. I too think her condition is the cause of the brother’s feud.

Regarding “flash-forwards” do we even know if Kate is still alive when baby Jack is an adult? I can’t remember seeing her, and Toby seems to be alone.

Did we see any of the regular cast in the same scenes as adult baby Jack? I didn’t think so. There was a flash forward, at Kevin’s fancy house, but I don’t remember seeing baby Jack there.

To answer your question directly, though, no we don’t see Kate and adult baby Jack in the same scene.

So Randall’s about to be mugged? I had to rewind because I was half watching the end assuming he was just going to go sit and watch the sun rise.

I usually like Miguel but he was being a jerk. He gets a bit of a pass because he was lashing out from fear, but he was still a jerk.

That whole date storyline was super cute but man, that was a rough ending. Almost slow-cooker rough.

Do we believe Toby’s “I turned away from the kiss”?

I got the impression that he’s hallucinating seeing Jack

I thought it was a home invader. Or, he’s having another breakdown and hallucinating.

I think Miguel was justified. He’s always been the outside to the Big 3 and here comes Randall coming in once again to Save The Day. Now, I can see Randall seeing a bigger change because he doesn’t live with Rebecca, so he probably saw things Miguel missed because Miguel is with Becca on a daily basis. And Randall could have dialed it back, by giving Miguel a list of specialists to call. But that’s not Randall, as we’ve seen. It’s a wonder the doctor didn’t report Randall for stalking (Really? 47 emails?)

And speaking of coming on strong, what was up with Kevin? I know he set a deadline for himself to get married and have a baby by the time he’s 40, but swooping in on some girl and whisking her off to a private John Legend concert seemed over the top, even for him. And I didn’t call it a hall pass, but (from Friends) it’s called The List.

I am not sure Kate and Toby are going to last. They should be getting therapy to help them pull together for their special needs child. Kate went all Mama Bear and I think Toby feels like he got left in the dust.

Hall pass is also used in some circles; it was the title of a movie with Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis.

But I agree that the guy was a home invader, not a hallucination.

I’m biased because Toby is my favorite, but I think Kate is being a little too hard on him. It’s fine that she’s mad that he didn’t want to go to the retreat and he was being jerky about it, but being mad at him in general for having trouble accepting the baby’s issues is unfair. I mean, he needs to suck it up and deal (which he did at the end of the episode) but it’s ok for him to have FEELINGS and acknowledge that he needs to work through them. He’s not going to abandon his family. He’s having a little bit of a “oh wow this is a big deal” moment. Strong people can’t be strong all the time. He’ll do the right thing in the end. Give him some breathing room.

And I don’t like how the last two episodes made it look like there was a genuine emergency for past-Kate when it’s clearly just a (correct) gut feeling on Mandy Moore’s part. WE know Kate’s in trouble with that loser but from THEIR perspective, it’s kind of over the top to drag Randal out of school and go drive to get her when there’s nothing but a weird phone call to indicate there’s a problem.

All the jumping to conclusions everyone was doing all episode was making me dizzy.

I feel like this show is nothing but misleads and exaggerations lately. To be honest I’ve just kind of skipped through the past few shows to get the basics. I caught the latest one today and it just annoyed me. I cannot stand Kate now. I hate seeing her face. I hate how she said “Tooby”. That’s what I hear anyway. I loathe teen Kate with her weird and constant sneer. Her character has never progressed beyond sad fat woman with sad fat woman issues. And I see no strength. Her mom calls her strong but really, all she does is whine and worry and say “tooby” a lot.

A couple of weeks ago, the episode was about how Randall was handling the aftermath of the home invader. He installed a security system and obsessively monitored it (to the point that he was distracted while hosting a public meeting). Did anyone else think it was weird that the alarm code was his parents’ anniversary?

Weird for you and me? Yes

Weird for this co-dependent mess of a family? No.

I mean, I wasn’t technically around for my parents’ wedding, although I assume I was a visible baby bump, so I don’t know the exact date they got married. I have a vague idea. Some people do know but I think it’s ok if you’re kind of like “Oh, first week of June.”

I think I only remember a vague date (they’ve been divorced for decades) because I did the baby bump math and I was like “Hey, wait a second! That was right before I was born!”
