Don’t you have that backwards?
Actually if in addition to being an asshole most of his career and the steroid use it turns out he is also committed Statutory Rape of a 15 year old. I would say it matters enough to at least keep this moron out of the Hall of Fame.
Jim
There are worse people (well, one that I know of) in the Hall. If his cheating in baseball isn’t enough to keep him out - and ruling that wouldn’t bother me - I don’t care who he slept with.
But was the age of consent 16 back when this all started seventeen years ago? A lot of states (particularly Southern states) have raised their age of consent in the past couple of decades.
For example, the age of consent was 14 in Georgia twenty years ago. It’s 16 now.
There was a wave of legislation in the early-to-mid 1990s during which several states toughened their laws and raised the age of consent.
ETA: After some quick research, looks like Florida’s statute was last amended in 1991 – 17 years ago.
I cannot recall the wording of the baseball Hall of Fame ballot, but I am pretty sure there are six things listed and he has violated two now instead of just one.
I don’t know what the Hall’s criteria are, but my reasoning is that if they want to keep Clemens out for being a cheat - and lying about it under oath, which I guess makes it worse - I fully support that. Factoring Clemens’ affair into the Hall when his plaque would be somewhere near Ty Cobb’s is, to me, totally ridiculous.
So when (i.e. at what age) was the sex supposed to have first occurred? Who is claiming that Roger had sex with her when she was 15?
According to Wiki, she moved to Nashville when she was 18, and recorded her first album when she was 21.
So Rocket might not be a jailbat chasing sleaze after all, just a garden variety adulterer.
I can’t read, never mind. :smack:
But I love this quote from McNamee’s lawyer-
“None of this would have been revealed but for his lawsuit and sanctimonious testimony before Congress.”
Somehow I knew you were talking about Cobb and I agree, but because one cheating, gambling jerk made it in should not be used as grounds for this cheating sleaze-bag to enter. However, it sounds like I’m quibbling and we would both be happy if he does not get voted into the Hall.
5. Voting: Voting shall be based upon the player’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.
Well, the Rog has proven he has no integrity, a bad character, and his sportsmanship (according to the definition of sportsmanship on dictionary.com, which includes “fairness”) is in serious question. Also, his contributions to the team–at least for the last ten years–have been allegedly fueled by steroids.
So, I think this should be the nail in the coffin that the bastard will never get a sniff of Cooperstown.
Thank you, I remembered there were six points, but I could not remember the wording. I would say his character is getting beat up pretty good this year. It is one thing to cheat on your wife, it is another to have a long term affair starting as a 28 year with a 15 year old. The first is wrong, but would have disqualified most players from the hall I suspect, the second reeks of exceptional low character.
He is aces for the player’s record, playing ability & maybe contributions to the team but he is a woeful failure for integrity, sportsmanship & character. I am not even sure of the contribution part. It may well be that he is the person the led Andy Pettitte astray. We may never know, but it sure does look suspicious.
Jim
Does it matter?
From what I heard on the radio and read on at least on of the links is that they first met when she was fifteen but any sexual activity happened much latter, when she was 21-22. So the argument about if he is a rapist can be put to rest at least until other info comes in.
I was just cracking a joke on the respective reputations of the two papers here in New York.
:: Looks at L’s location :: Well, you know what I mean.
Yes, according to the lady in question, they met when she was 15 and they went together to a hotel room but… there was no sex until she was of an age where sex would have been both legal and comparatively socially acceptable.
I will leave as an exercise to the reader the determination of the plausibility of that account.
Not that it matters either way, of course, as the damage is done. I still don’t get why Clemens didn’t drop this whole thing against MacNamee once he realized that MacNamee wouldn’t back down. He had to know this stuff would come out. He had to.
I’m guessing he probably thought it would be easy to show that McNamee was a lowlife and a toady and that no one would ever take the word of some nobody with a dubious past over the Great Roger Clemens.
So was I. Twice.
Not a country music fan but from what I have read she is a washed up, drunk, drugged up (or formerly), has-been who is trying to revive her career with a reality TV show who just happens to get a bunch of publicity at the right time. And on the other side we have that paragon of virtue, Roger Clemens. So yeah, I might be having a bit of difficulty in the plausibility department.
Another affair, apparently.
There are thousands of people, men and women, who’d I’m sure be willing to make up tales about poor Roger to get money and attention- its too bad for him they found one to do so who has been alone in hotel rooms with him!
No.
Age of consent rules vary wildly in the US, and worldwide. In Idaho and Hawaii the age of consent is 14; South Carolina too, but only for heterosexual encounters. Connecticut, Colorado, and Virginia are all at 15.
Thus, ‘banging 15 year olds’, as you say, is perfectly legal in 6 US states. I know this isn’t GQ, but some level of factual rigor is appropriate, wouldn’t you agree?
