I was over at the Bronze, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer postingboard. One of the younger posters, the 10 year old daughter of a friend of mine posted this:

Thank goodness it’s you ST. Germain. I’ve been watching for you forever. I’m sorry to bother you but I needed to ask a question and Mum isnt here and Da would just get mad or sad. I was playing with the girl from next door and I told her I want to be the slayer and she said you can’t cause your black and your not a real family cause your all adopted. I know thats wrong, cause Mum says that familys are made in the heart and not in the flesh. And I’m not worried about being diffrent colors cause Mum say God sees with an artists eyes and he paints with a rainbow palit. Thats why we are all diffrent. And she always says don’t fight. That means your just trying to win and make someone else have your opinion and thats not right. Buy Carla said I can’t be the slayer cause the slayer is only white. She says that someone like me whos only half white can’t be the slayer is that true? Is that one of the rules? I have blond hair and my eyes are green. If the slayer has to blond then its ok, but I am half black. Can I still be a slayer? Da says only five more minutes.

Cairo - {{{hugs}}} The neighbor kid is so wrong. In fact, if you watch the second season, you’ll see that there was a black slayer. Her name was Kendra and she and Buffy worked together. And we know that there was a Chinese girl who was the slayer. So you see? Slayers come in all races. And your mum is right about families. God made you a family. If you had to be related by blood, how would your mom and dad be family? They are related. When they married, they became a family. And when you were all adopted, you became a family, too. I have two cousins who are adopted, and they are no less my cousins than the others. Adopted children are special because someone loves them enough to choose them, whereas children that are born into a family you have to take because you don’t have a choice. Does that make sense?

Is the next-door neighbour ten as well? And did she get this from her parents? If her parents arent preaching this stuff they need to be told of this attitude, post haste…
If they are preaching it, then, well… Good luck to you and your friend.

We also know there was a black Slayer in the early 80s, and that the very first Slayer was black.

If you talk to Cairo again, maybe you should tell her that too. That’s an excellent reply StGermain, and hopefully she’ll take it to heart.

I hate seeing seeing stuff like this. It makes me very sad when even children are playing games and throwing around hurtful comments for whatever reason.
Thank you for responding to this young girl with such compassion and sensitivity StGermain. People like you keep my faith alive.
