This Years' Grammys

Beck’s Midnight Vultures is nominated for album of the year. However, that album came out awhile ago; I remember buying it for one of my brothers for Christmas in 1999. And same deal with David Bowie’s “Thursday’s Child,” nominated for best male rock performance. But, dude! That sound came out so long ago! I remember listening to it on the radio at the beginning of September of 1999.
So I don’t get it–these albums and songs (and others, I’m sure) did not come out last year. Can someone explain how they nominate?

Ack! Got nominated, the last line should read.

Unlike the Academy Awards, the Grammys don’t use the calendar year as their standard.

The current crop of nominees had to be released, or come to prominence (a loophole used usually for the Best New Artist category), from October 1, 1999 to September 30, 2000.

This also explains how U2’s “Beautiful Day,” released as a single within the deadline, can get tons of nods, but the album it’s from, which got critics all excited, wasn’t nominated. The album wasn’t released until October of this year.
