Well, the Grammy nominations are out, does anyone actually care? Or do you think these awards are as ass-backwards as the Oscars?
For record of the year, I think Outkast for Hey Ya! will pull it out, since I feel that they’ll pull a sweep on awards night. If that doesn’t happen, it’ll probably go to Coldplay for Clocks. For the first time in a while, the five songs in record of the year are halfway decent. Not that I’d listen to half of them, but nothing offends in the group. Which there is plenty of in the song of the year category. Those are the best 5 songs, with respect to lyrics, of the year. Arvil Lavigne? ugh…
I just hope Radiohead wins all of there nominations and Queens of the Stone Age win in Hard Rock Performance.
Not much interested me this past year.
Radiohead is awesome.
Hail to the Thief!
Linky Linky
I’m interested in the movie categories, so we have the following tally for films:
Two
Chicago
Gangs of New York
A Mighty Wind
One
Catch Me If You Can
8 Mile
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
The Hours
Kill Bill, Vol. 1*
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers*
The School of Rock
Seabiscuit
2 Fast 2 Furious*
- indicates who I think should win
I’m personally shaking in my boots to find out who wins the award for…
Best Polka Performance in an Urban Hip Hop Setting with Vocals
or another particular favourite of mine…
Best Rock Performance by a Left Handed Guitarist born under the Sign of Capricorn Rising with Alternative Influences set against a Metal Background featuring Hip Hop overtones…
I guess by now my fellow readers will be getting a hint of what I find so ridiculous about The Grammy’s these days - quite simply - they’ve exploded (nay, veritibly Big Banged) the number of categories, and genres, and genres WITHIN genres that basically they give out an award to everyone who worked on a record anywhere in the industry in the last 12 months.
My understanding is as follows - in 1980 there were just 28 separate Grammy Awards for the entire show. By 2002 there were a 104 - you do the math.
All I’m saying is that by creating so many “versions within versions” of their Awards, they’ve simply done a really dumb thing - they’ve devalued the worth of a Grammy to now being little more than just another version of all the other music awards shows which take place each year - and Lord knows, there’s a shitload of 'em.
Certainly, there are far more “music” awards shows than there are “cinema” awards shows, and one thing’s for sure… The Oscars aren’t gonna be so dumb as to create another 80 variations of their categories just to try and stay “hip”.
Boy, dying sure helps your career when it comes to the Grammys, doesn’t it?
