those things on male turkeys' chests that look like horsehair tassles

Wild turkeys, anyway. I have not looked into whether domestic turkeys also sport these strange adornments.

What is it and what’s it for? (My husband says it’s a necktie.) You can see an example here.

It’s a beard , Helena.

A beard (like bristles on a broom) hangs down from the chest; typical in males and in5% of females.

Shot one yesterday, that sported an 8 inch beard.
