Speaking of kings, this thread reminded me of an amusing quote I heard once, which I thought was attributed to King Solomon:
When we were first married, my wife and I could sleep on the edge of a sword. Now a bed 6 cubits wide is too small.
I googled it and couldn’t find a cite for it, though. Google’s AI encouragingly assures me it’s a well-known proverb, but can’t even find a cite itself. So who knows where I got it from:
Based on the provided search results, this quote is a well-known proverb highlighting the evolution of a marriage from intimacy to incompatibility, often attributed to King Solomon, although the search results do not trace it back to a specific verse in the biblical Song of Solomon or Proverbs.
It is likely found in Jewish Midrashic literature or traditional commentaries discussing the complexities of human relationships, rather than directly in the 1 Kings or Song of Solomon scripture.
16 inches more floor space comes in handy more often than16 inches more bed space ever would, in my estimation. A queen size has always been adequate for my wife and I. Alas, there is plenty of room to sleep through the night without ever touching when that is deemed desirable.
i was on a long trip with a Girl Scout group and was sharing a room with 2 other women. 2 queen beds.
I wound up having one to myself as the other two knew each other. “No Spooning!” one of them declared. Likely not an issue, LOL. It may be different with 2 guys.
On family trips, we usually wind up with a room with 2 queen beds (occasionally 2 doubles). There’s a girls’ bed (me and my daughter) and a boys’ bed (husband and son).
12 years or so ago, I took my daughter, her friend (both 15-16) and a female college student to NYC for a long weekend. Hotels in NY being what they are, the best I was able to do was a room with 2 double beds. The teens shared one, the student and I shared the other. Not optimal but it was just for 2 nights so we dealt with it.
Yep I just learned from this thread that US measurements are different to UK ones. As is the case with loads of things! I did wonder someone would think a kingsize bed was overly large.
Since this thread has King sized experience (okay, that was TERRIBLE, you may boo me, but I can’t resist) have any of you had much experience with a split-king?
I mentioned upthread that we’re considering a sleep number, in part because my wife’s preference is something akin to a plank, and I’m more middle-of-the-road on firmness (in part because I’m a side sleeper with not-the-best hips and knees).
My Aunt (RIP) was a student nurse in NYC sharing a single bed with 2 other girls. They were on nursing shifts, but when they overlapped they ‘topped and tailed’ in the single bed.
We started out with a queen mattress, and like a lot of you, dogs caused us to get a king. About 14 years ago, when our son was diagnosed with cancer, I slept in the bedroom closer to him, in case he needed anything. It was a guest room with a full-sized bed. I have never looked back. That room is now my own Shangri-La. My husband and I both sleep so much better being in separate beds and rooms. I like my window open, a fan or other sleep noise running all night, and I like my door closed. He likes none of the above. We are both up in the night peeing, he snores terribly, and some nights he gets up and watches tv. We’re very happy with this arrangement and we still meet up in the big king!
My parents slept on a full-sized mattress their entire married life. I don’t know how they did it. My full is perfect just for me. I can’t imagine another adult sleeping next to me. On occasion, our 70 lb boxer sleeps with me. It is torturous! My legs and hips are all cramped up.
I visited a friend who is part of a gay truple, and the three men share a large bed for… bed-sharing activities, which also sometimes includes sleeping, and also have another small bedroom or two with smaller beds that are just for sleeping. They have a separate dressing room where everyone in the household keeps their clothes (three adult men and their 5 year old daughter). So it doesn’t matter where you sleep, you get up and get dressed in the dressing room.
I thought it was a novel solution to everyone getting enough sleep.
