Is there a reason that random threads that I respond to aren’t automatically subscribing? It seems like responding to a thread was an automatic subscription until about Wednesday of this past week.

It doesn’t happen automatically unless, in the user control panel (user cp) -> edit options you set
“Use ‘Email Notification’ by default?” to yes.
I don’t recommend doing that (or even using e-mail notification) since, because of the server being overloaded, it’s unreliable, and causes more work for the server.
