Three Gallons of Cider Vinegar

I was behind someone in the store today who bought three gallons of the stuff. What on earth would he be doing with it? I would have asked him, but people up here can be funny about things and he didn’t look approachable. Any ideas?

Gonna BBQ a Moose?

Did he have honey too? A hot cup of honey and cider vinegar in water is tasty.

Hmmm. If it had been white vinegar, I’d say ‘cleaning supply’ with confidence. You can use vinegar to wash walls, windows, greasy appliances, and so forth. It’s great for deoderizing, too. Use it in a rug shampooer, for example, if you have lingering scents from pet accidents. Add it to your rinse to de-scent laundry. Lots of stuff.

But Cider vinegar? So far as I know, it’s basically only used for eating. But that’s one hell of a lot of pickled whatevers.

My guess would be bbq sauce.

Sekanjabin?

Mint, cider vinegar pinch of salt and honey cooked down into a syrup. Pour a shot over a glass of ice and add water to thin it out. Sort of medieval persian gatoraid =)

At this time of year, I’d guess he was connected with a preschool or some other children’s institution which was going to be dyeing a whole ton of easter eggs the old fashioned way.

I’d guess making a whole lot of pickles.

Growing vinegar eels to feed aquarium fish.

Or maybe vinegaroons?

I once knew an IT guy who was offered a great job, but it required he pass urinalysis. So he chugged vinegar for a few day beforehand to clear the pot resins from his system. It didn’t work.

People use Cider Vinegar to diet as well. Maybe he had to drop a size before the Grand Ball?

Damn! Now I wish I had asked him. The Easter egg thing has some merit: perhaps he has 12 kids or was buying it for his wife’s elementary school class.

some brines will use cider vinegar as at least part of the liquid. Perhaps he was getting ready to do some serious BBQing.

If it were me, it’d be pickling.

Could be; a lot of people do home canning up here.

Kid doing a volcano for the science fair?

Is cider vinegar used for dyeing fabric? I know white vinegar is sometimes. Maybe he or his wife has a big project in the works.

I’ve seen entire books dedicated to its ‘miraculous’ properties. I know women who add it to the bath for PH, and it does make a nice hair rinse.

That’s my guess. Of course if it’s three gallons the person may be a teacher and using it for students.
