I should know better than to give whathisface any attention, but I do think it’s a problem if someone is posting under someone else’s name, even if they state a disclaimer. Somebody could join as a guest and ask under their own identity. Or you could ask a question on behalf of someone else. Not sure if that’s what Cal did, though.
Whatshisface could have reported the post or e-mailed a mod, but that wouldn’t have garnered him any attention, I suppose.
I trust that I am not more dense than my neighbors, but I was always oppressed with a sense of my own stupidity in my dealings with Sherlock Holmes - to the extent that, when he uttered these words, I was possessed of a fierce conviction that here was a statement of piercing insight and clarity. Yet for all this, its logic eluded me.
They will never completely ban my ferret. She has more socks than all of you combined. Every time I sweep under anything, or go into any corner…another sock! She will overwhelm this board with her socks!
I just stumbled across this. I’m surprised and flattered and amazed.
My thoughts:
1.) Any publicity is good publicity.
2.) Pepper Mill was a member, briiefly, but the SDMB didn’t interest her enough to stick around (although she loves when I report to her about what’s going on, and will come in to read a Really Good Post). That said, I don’t recall letting her post under my name.
3.) I’ve relayed stuff from MilliCal. On occasion, she’s asked if she could post something direct to the Board, and I let her use my entry. She’s 10, which is below the minimum Board age, so I don’t think I;'m depriving the Board of user fees. And it gives her experience composing and relating to people if I don’t write it myself.
4.) Why anyone would have a problem with any of this is beyond me.
5.) I’m not familiar with the jarbabyj incident, but, judging from what others have written, it doesn’t seem relevant.
6.) The Dope Board as a site for molesters? It seems unlikely. And we keep an eye on the threads she’s been involved in.
TURDUCKEN is one of the reasons the boards might not be suitable for youngsters – he demonstrates very poor socialization skills, and promotes trolling.
I don’t buy the paedophilia angle, but one of the problems with allowing a young child to helm their own thread is that someone might jump in at some point not realizing that its really a small girl and not the actual user and say something to offend or hurt the childs feelings. Or that someone could do it on purpose. Then you’re going to have a child with hurt feelings, a pissed off parent, etc.
Perhaps this should serve as a more general reminder that skillful adults can disagree with each other without being obscene or insulting, though the proof of this becomes scarcer and scarcer on this board.
