we used To play a drinking game with “demon dogs”/“lords of light”, of course the vhs tape we watched it from was also affectionately referred to as the “Ookla humps everything” tape because for some reason it contained only episodes where at some point, Ookla would grab something like a car or a puppet, wave it over his crotch, then toss it aside. I was disappointed when i acquired all the episode and foun it didnt happen in EVERY episode… just the ones on the tape!
I remember it with a certain fondness, and I enjoyed the surreality of seeing it when Cartoon Network used to show it at like 3 am back when I stayed up that late, but come on.
I remember hearing a really great story by one of the writers on Thundarr. The censors would come down very hard on them since the show involved MAGIC and “realistic background destruction.” Magic was already a concern since church groups thought anything related to magic was of the devil and the post-apoc backstory provided concerns since kids could get freaked out by seeing a recognizable car or a lamp post all mangled in the background.
The writers would therefore go over the top with the violence in the scripts because they knew it would get whittled down to what they actually wanted to do.
I started watching these recently on the Boomerang channel (Cartoon channel specializing in 60s-80s cartoons). After about 5 episodes I stopped watching it.
He never actually ever hit any living thing with his sun sword.
His only plan of attack was rush in fool-hardily and wreak havoc.
There was plenty of sexual innuendo.
They never explain how Aerial had such an expansive knowledge of civilization from 1000 years ago.
That does suck, but it was a kiddie show afterall.
Duh. Barbarian!
Shouldn’t this be in the “pros” column? Good on them sneaking that into a Saturday morning cartoon.
Oh, c’mon. This adds to the character’s mystique - she was probably a double major in evocation magic and archaeology :D.
Yeah, okay - the show wasn’t…good. But I have fond memories of it anyway, along with Dungeons and Dragons, which I’m sure would suck heinously to me today as well.
I could swear that I heard years ago that Ookla got his name from a phonetic pronunciation of “UCLA”. I don’t know if this was something that appeared on the show, or a writer giving a shout-out to his alma mater, or what…anyone else ever hear of that?
