Though stopped on the 10th with a considerable par putt, he should be able to overcome his +5 deficit for a couple of reasons:
He’ll be hitting the course early to complete his first round. This gives him a chance to putt before the green get torn up. Even on the 18th, he’ll only have had 8 three-somes before him.
The rain should have softened up the greens so he’ll be better able to approach the pins.
He knows he can intimidate the field by erasing the +3 score he now has this morning. He can force the field to shoot at the pins as they try to distance themselves from him.
Finally, he’s Tiger. I can’t remember him having two bad days in a row.
Ditto, Chief. The fact that he chunked, I mean CHUNKED, a SW from 90 and missed the green, he definitely had something going on yesterday with his swing. I’m betting he misses the par putt on 10, but then plays the last 8 holes 3 under, then I think its look out everybody!
Popular opinion is that he had a timing problem yesterday. In true Tiger fashion, after the 1/2 round he hit the practice range. I believe he and Butch (Harmon, his swing coach) would have worked out the problem.
That hit off the toe of his nine-iron fell out of an ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. The buried sand lie was icing on the cake.
Ditto again. I should have brought the portable in the office, but I tend to get a bit loud when el tigre shows signs of being human. I’ll just wait for the update via pgatour.com’s leaderboard.
Chief- I think Tiger’s going to recover nicely today- I realize he’s 4 over after the first, but I think he’s going to get his mind right and play better. The field will come back towards him- Goosen and Isawa can’t keep up that pace throughout the tournament.
Perhaps Tiger’s distracted by the asinine things his father has been saying recently. If I were Tiger, I’d have a little chat with dear old dad to say - “um, dad? love ya, but if you say anything else to the press about 1) my love life; 2) my status as savior of the world; or 3) comparisons between me and civil rights leaders, say Mandela or Gandhi, I’m going to have to ever so lovingly wrap this 2 Iron around your head.”
Sheesh- the guy’s a phenomenal talent, the greatest competitor in sports- can’t his dad shut his yap?
Whew. Ok, Goosen’s back to reality. OK, Tiger, your only eight shots back, let’s get with the program. Of course since Duval is now -2, el tigre may get motivated.
