i don’t know about you but when i played college golf the one unforgiveable sin was to walk off in the middle of a round. crud, shoot 75 and take your lumps. i’ll bet a nickel if he was closer to the front and was having a smoking hot round he might have kept going.
neta: this is the player that won a u.s. open on a busted leg. not like he has never played hurt before. so it just seems kind of cruddy that because he is having a bad round he gets to cash it in with no hmmmm going on.
He’s down and he’s not going to kick himself - someone has to do it, by gum! It’s true that he would have kept playing if he were winning. But it’s totally ridiculous to slam a guy for being a quitter when he withdrew from one tournament. He’s played hundreds of events and withdrawn four times. It’s not like he quits every time he’s losing.
It was bad timing. People are already down on him and he gave them more ammunition.
But I will wait for more info before I say he walked because he was shooting crappy.
and i totally understand what you folks are saying.
when you hurt, you hurt. and it is up to everyone individually to determine at what point does the gain outweigh the pain.
if this would have happened earlier, no cares. but the new softer gentler tiger seems to be a lot like the old tiger is all i am saying.
he’s an arrogant ass that got his head handed to him. now his golf game is not where it needs to be. therefore, i quit.
i played in a cash game a couple of weeks ago. 500 buy in, two rounds. shoot 69 first round. final pair on the second day. the leader hooks one into the weeds on the 17th. i think he either hit a large rock or got a root. his arm looks like shoot. but he’s up by three. he basically played the final hole one handed. wins by one. turns out he broke his wrist and forearm. yeh, i think when you have it going you keep going. if not then you just plug around. or you could quit.
Forty-six players have withdrawn from tournaments this year.
The absolutely shocking-- I tell you SHOCKING – thing is that none of them appear to have been in contention.
Since you have such high regard for Tiger’s ability to play through any injury, I propose a test. At the US Open, let’s have some Jeff Gilooley guy to ambush Tiger and beat him liberally with a weapon sometime after the 2nd round. Since we know that Tiger can play with a broken leg, if Tiger can’t cope with a vicious beating with a tire iron, we’ll know for sure that he’s a quitter if he withdraws.
but that was my point. if he would have been having a good round and was in contention i think he might have still kept going. and i agree that a lot of marginals and also rans quit after having a bad start. it’s just that tiger now gets to put himself into that group. another box he gets to check off on the journey of life.
How? “Old” Tiger quit three tournaments in a 15-year career. Since coming back, he withdrew from this one tournament due to an injury. If he makes a habit of this you might have a point later on.
and please folks, i think the guy hangs the moon when it comes to golf ability. the fact that he chose to quit is what i have a problem with. especially since he chose to quit when he was facing adversity. that’s weak sauce.
Yeah, it’s almost like he didn’t play a tournament for five months, went through a very public personal crisis, has played only a few tournaments since coming back, and is potentially injured. If only there were some kind of explanation for all this!
Given that he’s chosen not to quit in similar situations in the past, I’m going to go ahead and say maybe he thought his play was not going to get any better and that he couldn’t keep playing.
so the fact that he was facing current adversity and quit that he might have battled through in the past is ok currently?
i don’t get that. matter of fact after going through rehab it seems like he should be more willing to face up to life’s realities. the fact that he can’t, or didn’t, makes me think even less of him.
sorry folks, i am a golf purist. it is self regulated and self governed. if you don’t or can’t play by those rules you get a big x in my book. so when i tee it up, i am going 18. and if i am in the weeds i call it on myself if i need a drop. the fact that the “greatest golfer ever” can’t even adhere to normal saturday hacker standards doesn’t make me respect him a whole heck of a lot. matter of fact makes him kind of less than us weekend warriors.
Tiger is the only one who knows how good or how bad he felt. I’m happy to let him decide whether he’s physically up to competing or not.
If he had a long history of pulling out of tournaments he’s losing, claiming (conveniently) that his back hurt, maybe people would have a right to question hsi character or toughness. But as it is, we KNOW he’s had some genuine, painful injuries that have kept him out of competition. That buys him the benefit of the doubt.
What does that have to do with Tiger in this tournament? He wasn’t even close to being the leader after 3 days.
Are you really saying that it doesn’t matter where you are in the standings, if you have an injury, play thru it? That’s nuts.
The US open is about 1 month away. Tiger won it at Pebble the last time it was played there. It would be absolutely stupid to jeopardize his chances there.
