I can see saying about a lot of athletes, but Tiger Woods, Mr. Play through the pain and tough it out? This article is pure nastiness. What a turd this reporter is.
I don’t see a problem with taking where he is in the standings into account when deciding to play through an injury. Why risk making the injury worse in order to end up tied for 25th? But if I’ve got a shot at the US Open 1st place? Different calculus.
This wasn’t the US Open, and he wasn’t in contention, so what would be the point in aggravating an injury?
And not for nothing, but when he played and won that US Open with a broken leg, it ended up costing him the rest of the season. He’s got three more Majors left to play this summer. Why would he risk shortening another season for a meaningless tourney where he’s not in contention?
Not that I disagree with you generally on this (see my post above), but this is not a “meaningless” tournament. The Players’ Championship is often referred to as The 5th Major. Certainly from Tiger’s standpoint, real majors are the most important thing, but let’s not denigrate this tournament.
i’ve never teed it up and then quit in the middle of a round. even when it was stinking.
he’s an arrogant ass and now apparently he doesn’t even give back to the sport that has made him a mulit millionaire (billionaire?). “oh, noes. i ain’t gonna win. i quit”.
No biggie. I was thinking of the folks reading this thread who aren’t golf fans, and who probably don’t know the significance of this tournament. 29 of the top 30 players in the world started on Thursday. You also get more points in the world standings for winning a tournament like this than you get for “regular” tournaments. I don’t know about FedEx Cup points, but I’d guess it’s the same for that, too.
Tiger has a number of personal goals for his golf career, but #1 of those goals is to beat Nicklaus’ record of 18 majors. Everything takes a back seat to that goal. His outlook towards tournaments is unique in the golf world.
Your experience as an amateur golfer in this respect has nothing whatsoever to do with what a pro golfer might do. Especially if that pro golfer is TW.
BTW— who is that guy whose voice we hear when they’re showing clips from previous TPCs? I half expect to hear him say: WAAAAAAAAALT!
you are dead on. i only played college golf and a couple of minis.
all i was trying to point out is that golf is a game with a heck of a lot of tradition and decorum. even when i was 5 down with 6 to go or 3 over at the turn, i never chucked it.
tiger has made a ton of cash on this sport/endeavor. to give up on it seems kind of contrary. he’s an arrogant ass pissing on the activity that has made him rich. seems kind of shitty, is all.
i mean if he was hurt, he would have known that on the range.
If you’re really that experienced you’d know that pro golfers drop out of tourneys every week due to minor injuries. In a game that requires such fine motor control, a minor injury can screw up your game in a big hurry.
A lot of people have been resentful of Tiger challenging golfs treasured records. I suspect we’ll see a lot more articles like this one tomorrow. The knifes are coming out.
tiger won on a broken leg fgs. so minor injuries are a reason to quit, bullshit.
i’ve never met a single competitive golfer that didn’t have a tweak or blister. matter of fact i played with kite when he had a “broken” thumb. didn’t keep me from getting my clock cleaned.
he’s an ass wipe and now we get to add quitter to his resume.
The knives are his fault. He had the world by the ass ,but couldn’t resist being a player off the course too. Sad. But he is paying. He is more like Daly than Nicklaus now.
