Tight leather....

As a Roman re-enactor I sometimes need to make a secure join between to pieces of wood at 90 degrees. Usually, there is a partial half-lap joint and possibly a peg, but finally the join is secured by wrapping with leather thong.

The trouble is that no matter how tight I start the wrapping, it soon works loose - maybe days, maybe hours.

So, my question is, how to make sure leather thong goes on tight and stays that way?

Soak it in water, and stretch it- not too much mind you. When it drys, it’ll be tight. Maybe too tight if you stretched it too much.

I wonder if using rawhide instead of cured leather, soaking it in water, stretching it tightly in place, then allowing it to dry would work?

I really should learn to preview.

The thread title is misleading. I pictured bearded men in harnesses and ropes and such.

**Acetylsalicylic ** - No worries. That’s what we call a simulpost, and they’re common. Just helps to prove the adage “Great minds think alike.”

**chaoticdonkey ** - Same here.

I pictured Suzi Quatro.

Well, the OP does sort of lend itself to that in spots . . .

Personally, I think a leather thong would be uncomfortable, but that’s why I’m not into all that costumey stuff.
