Tim Tebow as tight end

No the guy was dead weight otherwise, he wasn’t even all that fit. But he had a good career as a QB though.

You’ve probably heard of him. He got up to second on the depth chart the following year and became famous for a wacky video review call that overturned what was obviously a sack into an incomplete pass.

I understand that several years later, he was an instrumental part of an effort to teach aerostatics to many football fans.

Tebow took 16 snaps in the preseason game this weekend, and in a complete non-surprise, did not do well.

He was targeted once, and either he ran the wrong route or the WR did, because the WR caught the ball directly in front of a befuddled-looking Tebow. Tebow tried to salvage the play by blocking and completely whiffed. He’s #85, lined up 3rd from the bottom.

On a blocking play, he was casually tossed aside by the lineman. Tebow tried to get back into the play but only managed to fall onto the ball carrier.

And the play that’s been getting the most attention, where he attempts to block, falls over, then stands up and spears his teammate.

Rosters are cut from 90 to 85 by 4:00 ET Tuesday.

I watched some clips of him and clearly he was somewhat befuddled and was just really bad. Just a liability, not even practice squad level.

But I reflexively want to defend him in some way based solely on the fact that Shannon Sharpe criticized him for it.

Blind squirrel…

And, the experiment is over, with the Jaguars releasing Tebow this morning as part of their first round of roster cuts.

Typically, Tebow after being cut cited a bible verse (Romans 8:28) about how God works for the good in all things.

He should have cited Ecclesiastes 2:11:

“Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.”

Well, he must be citing that verse today.

Tebow Release from the Jags.

Did Tebow every mention his vaccination status? If he’s not vaccinated, I wonder if that confirmed his early dismissal.

Early dismissal?

From what I gather, he was part of the first round of cuts (from 90 to 85) and I doubt anybody wonders why based on what they saw. Maybe somebody out there thinks he wasn’t the 88th (or whatever) best player on the team, but he wasn’t all that far off, either. There was slim chance he was going to be close to the 53 man roster, even as a backup.

It was very clear that bringing on Tebow was a publicity stunt and it was a good one. There were lots of jersey sales and it got a ton of attention. It was a win/win for the Jaguars and Tim alike, maybe even a bit for the NFL (depending on what their cut of merchandise sales was). I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more of these “tryouts” for popular former players.

“I was sacked by God.”

Yes, I see what I did there.

Man, $120 for a jersey. Still, I suspect that most of the people who bought them will be happy to keep them.

I was interested to learn that there is a purchase refund available if your player is traded (but retired or cut? Nope).

Oh, I think he’s been a publicity stunt since he started playing baseball and was just there to sell merchandise and tickets. Absolutely zero chance of making the team. He was beyond dreadful in the preseason game,

But, there has been a strong push by the NFL to get as many people vaccinated as possible and if Tebow wasn’t, it makes it an easy decision to end the stunt early.

I suppose so, but the first cutdown day works just as well and without any potential political baggage.

It also took all the coverage and pressure off Lawrence. Think about how little we’ve heard about the #1 pick this year. All Jags news has been about Meyer or Tebow.

I agree with all you said.
But do know one fairly successful example of this exact position change.
Blake Bell was Oklahoma’s quarterback his junior year, but moved to tight end for senior session.
He has played in the NFL for several years now.
That being said Tebow age and time away from the game make this a serious longshot.

Logan Thomas is another and didn’t switch to tight end until he got in the NFL.

Though, he apparently had played WR and TE in high school – definitely not the same as having played the position in college, but at least he, unlike Tebow, had some familiarity with a position other than quarterback.

The Packers’ Robert Tonyan is another example; he was a quarterback in high school, and started out as a quarterback at Indiana State, before moving to WR in his second year. When he came to the NFL, he moved to tight end, and he’s now the Packers’ starter.
