Gosh, I’m familiar with this dish having just THREE ingredients: hamburger, cream soup (preferably mushroom) and of course Tater Tots. I’m sure it can be made with infinite variations, including this one.
I used to make a version of it many years ago when I had young kids. My ex was from MN, so we made her mother’s version of it. I don’t recall what all went into it other than the ground beef, cream soup, green beans and the tots, but it’s been about 40+ years since I made it, so I beg forgiveness.
Very, very Midwestern.
Almost unknown in the South.
As a lifelong Midwesterner, there was a couple at my old church who had been in the military (or he had, at least) and when they were fairly new to town, we had a potluck, and she said she knew she had to be back in the Midwest when they recognized everything on the buffet line.

I had searched for it, but didn’t whoosh “hotdish” into one word.
I first heard about hotdish here, years ago. I made it soon after learning about it. It was one of those nights where I lectured about the meal as part of the presentation.
When it made the news recently (thanks Tim!) my gf asked me to make it again.
Yeah, it needs green beans, specifically French-style green beans. It so much more healthy that way. Eaten with ketchup on the side. Trust me with this recipe, I live in the congressional district that Tim Walz represented.
Oh, that dish just depresses me in any of its forms. Sill won’t make me vote for Trump, though.
