Of course, he had 11 years of performing with the Beatles (1960-'70) and 45 years (and counting) of touring since. During those 45 years, I’m betting that a whole lot of people bought tickets to see “ex-Beatle Paul McCartney” who wouldn’t have necessarily bought tickets to see just plain old Paul McCartney.
I wasn’t actually alive at the start of Paul Simon’s solo career, but was he really more famous than Simon and Garfunkel? To my generation, certainly not.

Simon and Garfunkel were HUGE, and when they split most seemed to think that Simon would be the one to fade away because Garfunkel had that gorgeous voice.
