Timberlakeing...Can we Make This a Thing?

So whilst in the car with a friend and Ms. Cups the sappy made-for-a-wedding song by Ed Shareen came on. I asked if he was still in One Direction even while making this song. I was then informed that he was never in One Direction.

I said “Oh I didn’t know that, I just thought he was a part of them and then Timberlaked them.”

I made it up on the spot there, and I am rather proud of myself. I think that if an artist is in a popular group, but breaks off and becomes more popular on their own than in that group, they were just Timberlaked. Like what Justin TImberlake did with NSYNC.

Their push-back was that Justin wasn’t the first to do this and said it could be called a number of different terms (Beyoncing, Michaeling,) but I didn’t make the term because was the first (wouldn’t that be Gaynoring? or Rossing?) but that he was agruably the most contemporarily famous one.

Plus he’s the one I like best.
So who’s with me?!? Can we make this term a thing? I think it’s got a lot of potential here…

Michael Jackson
Paul Simon
Ozzy Osborne
Sting
Neil Young
Eric Clapton
Paul McCartney

…are all better examples than Justin Timberlake.

Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney?

Clapton was never part of a group in a way that would fit. Yardbirds, Bluesbreakers, Faith, Cream, etc. were great groups, but he moved from one to the other throughout, not like MJ being part of then leaving the Jacksons or Timberland being part of then leaving NSync for a solo career.

And McCartney was a one-and-a-half/small handful-hit wonder post-Beatles. He’s a great musician and all, and you can love what he’s done on his own, but he’s former Beatle Paul McCartney, not ‘hey, did you know that guy from Wings was in a band before them?’

Interesting how perspectives can differ~

Exactly. Sorry OP.

True, JT isn’t the first to go solo and surpass the band from whence he came, but “Timberlaked” has more of a ring to it than the others. Plus, you automatically know who is being referred to because, really, how may Timberlakes do you know of.

I thing this thing is just crazy enough to work, Sir T.
(my personal choice would be a reference to that ex-Menudo member, but "Martinizing " already means something else).

How about saying they Beyonce’d them? That works as well or better than Timberlaked. Or Diana’d them.

Actually all of the examples above are a sausage fest - surely we can do better? Unless you think a popular group is by definition a boy band?

(Gwen) Stefanied?

That was the bottom post. :frowning:
(…you know… underneath it all…)

Ignorance fought! If I’d ever heard of either I’d blocked it. I’m not sure if that rates thanks though… hmmmm. Maybe ignorance was bliss.:smack:

I’d be leery to use the term since it’s not a unique behavior and it’s already over a decade old as an example. A lot of college age kids would miss the reference. To gain understanding with people you haven’t sold on the term in advance it probably needs to be more current. Otherwise you can just make up any nonsense term for the your friends since most need the term explained the first time anyway.

“He shmooed that band”
“He totally did. A feeblegurk move IMO.”

WhatwhatWHAT?

to do what?

Bring it on down to Timberlake-ville!

I’m in.

I’m with the OP. Timberlaked seems to sound the best when describing the action. A close second is Omar Little’s suggestion of Sting. But I think “He Sting’d 'em” doesn’t quite work because his solo persona wasn’t significantly more popular than The Police.

I didn’t want to do Beyonce’d because she has EVERYTHING nowadays. And I’m by no means old, but I’m enough of a fuddy-duddy to be annoyed that the kids these days think she’s just the perfect example of everything, so I wanted to be contrarian.

In a completely unrelated story: Timberlake is pretty much the perfect example of everything.

A lot of these are true, but I wanted to use someone young enough for the kids to recognize/want to talk about…but still famous enough for the older generation to know who he is

I think she became more popular after the group broke up, and a couple years after too. Didn’t JT start his move while the band was still together?

Catch fire! Take hold! If we use it at work, then a coworker uses it, then their cousin uses it…sooner or later we are seeing this on MTV or something

Re: McCartney’s popularity vs The Beatles–I think it can be argued than in terms of sheer numbers of live shows and tickets sold he easily surpasses The Beatles. That should count for something when judging his popularity/success.

I see your point, OP. JT is a household name, and so is the name of his former band, even with the younger generation. TLC has been gone longer than N’Sync and probably isn’t as relatable.

You can try to make it a thing, but Kanye will insist it belongs to Beyonce…

The OP is trying to take a large group of artists who went on to successful solo careers and Timberlake a new saying out of them.

Only if I can call it Timbahlakin’
