Time to move beyond UBB?

I see that this message board is getting into the territory where the UBB code just can’t quite keep up. This has happened to another board that I frequent (anandtech), and they solved the problem by coding up an entire new message board script.
I’ve been generally impressed by their new messageboard (called FuseTalk, implemented with ColdFusion modules). If the administrators are interested in keeping the board more stable in the future, I suggest at least looking at www.fusetalk.com

Note, I have no official affiliation with either www.anandtech.com or www.fusetalk.com. I was just impressed with the quality of their work.

A new message board is in the final stages of testing and will be rolled out in the near future. The current UBB board has been less than stable for many months now due to it’s size and usage. We’ve been in the awkward position of having a large amount of UBB content which was limiting our options in regards to future growth. Infopop, the makers of UBB, are coming out with an enterprise version message board and we had been pinning our hopes on eventually upgrading to that for many months. In mid-February we learned that the enterprise version was not the solution we were seeking and so we had to start looking elsewheres. A new product that is UBB-compatible, vBulletin, was released last week and we have been active testers of it for a number of weeks now. Our number one goal has been to transition to a new more stable message board product while preserving our current UBB content. We believe this new product will fulfill that goal.

My apologies to all for having had to live through a less than pleasant period of growth on the SDMB. I know the poor performance of the message board has been a source of aggravation to many. While I rarely post on the boards, I do follow the discussions closely and have been aware of these continuing problems for many months. I’m fairly assured the new message board will resolve many of the problems we have been having, especially the constant maintenance and poor performance issues. Thank you for your patience, things shall get better.

I see that vBulletin is “blisteringly fast”. Do any of the testers have blisters, or is it just hype?

I’ve seen it on another board and I liked it, it was very very fast, even with my poky modem.

One more time!

And for those that don’t read announcements:

Our ace technical staff will be installing our new message board software sometime this afternoon.

The board will be down while this happens. Unfortunately, this process is expected to take at least 8 hours, start to finish.

It’s a long time to be unavailable, but we think you’ll be happy with the end result. It’s a program that looks and feels exactly like UBB, so you won’t have anything new to learn, but it works much better. (Even offers you more options, you’ll all be jazzed, I promise.)

So please be patient while we move. See you on the other side.

Beautiful. I love you folks. Buy a round for the techs and send me the bill. Thank you, everyone.

Took a look at vbulletin…pretty slick. Hope we can measure up.

One of the few to be personally welcomed to this board by Ed Zotti.

Yours truly,

Thumbs up!

I understand this system uses TWO hamsters?

Just checked out the site. Looks pretty neat! The first thing I saw, though, was a small banner at the top of the board that said “Welcome to our newest member: UncleBeer.”

Be sure to corrupt them over there the way you’ve corrupted us here, okay, Unc?

I made my husband join a bridge club. He jumps next Tuesday.

Two BIG hamsters. And I hear they really like methedrine.

Um, disregard that last part. You don’t wanna know.

I never thought I’d see the day when new bulletin board software would play such a part in my life, but I’m really looking forward to this!

Go team!

Take me with you take me with you, don’t leave me behind!!!

I’ve learned that if someone says something unkind about me, I must live so that no one will believe it.

But…but…[Rilchiam’s lip trembles]…what’ll happen to all the old threads?..

sob…I LOVE YOU GUYS!

Tuba - if you would, please, thank the techs and everyone else connected with the board for me - I really do appreciate all they do to keep us going.

Thanks,
M2U

NOTHING.

They should all be there when you’re able to sign back in.

So please don’t worry.

isint there a upgrade for ubb that helps this? Because i get on a forum thats alot busier than this and it uses some fancy upgraded version that gets corrupt after 21 pages:)

(the upgraded couldent handle a 1.5 meg thread though:() it worked fine… it just took a couple minutes to d/l that thread:)

and finally editing:)

Looks good so far. Great job, everyone. And…yay! Thanks for the log-in option…I like that bunches.

Well, now, it appears that you guys have redecorated the place. I see a link at the top that says “Go to first unread post” that looks promising.

Moving the time/profile/etc. from the top to the bottom of each post is going to be confusing, I think. Any chance you can get it at the top again (just wondering)?

Are you really going to allow editing and deleting by posters? Or have you just not had a chance to customize the “Forum Rules” section and take that out?

I have to wait until tomorrow to read MPSIMS??!!

Hey, I just checked the vB Codes Explained page to make sure the italics code is still the same…and they have underlining.

Wow! This is slick. And in the process we got a name of one of the anonymous techs that labor in the ungodly hours.
What’s his favorite poison? Legal, mind you.

Hey, these posts aren’t in order! It stuck the post I just made in the middle of the thread, before other posts that were already here. What’s the deal with that?
