I think you have to distinguish between “round up all the Arabs”, which is an idiotic idea that no one would propose, and the idea that these attacks are the work of some Islamic terorist/fundamentalist group, which is overwhelmingly likely.
THis is NOT a defense of **Bills’ ** posturing. HOwever. he’s an easy target. There are other, more respected posters here saying pretty damn much the same thing in other threads (calling for nuke attacks - at a point when we haven’t a fucking clue how many were even in the buildings that were bombed, let alone who is responsable). Regardless of whether Iraq was connected to this attack (In reality I beleive the more fundamentalist Muslims dislike Saddamm Hussein’s ‘personality cult’ regime) They will be bombed soon.
And potentially Iran will be attacked to - even if Khatami is a moderate, it is still seen as a hotbed of terrorism. And this time Russia, France, and China will not have the will to object to loudly. France and Russia may even welcome it for once.
Then the Taliban regime will be targeted. They have offended the sensibilities of not only the West, but of Buddhist and Hinduist peoples as well, and will get targeted. Russia also sees Afghanistan as the nest of Chechen terrorism in their state.
Could the USA, Europe, Israel, Russia, and maybe even India unite in a war against some of these regimes? I don’t know. I don’t mean to hijack the post, but I am simply thinking of how the 'lets round up the Arabs (granted many of those peoples are not ‘Arab’ at all) ’ mentality may work on a more global level.

In this particular situation if you think capital punishment will act as a deterent, well, you are simply wrong. Firstly, the terrorists on all of the planes willingly killed themselves for their cause. Secondly, going into the compounds containing these criminals guns ablazing will simply piss of terrorists affiliated with them killing more American citizens. I KNOW I’m right about that.

I find that unlikely. Iran has not been much of a threat since the Ayatollah died in the late 80’s. I am by no means an Iranian apologist, but they are remarkably advanced in terms of democracy and, for lack of a better term, “civilization” from the western perspective. Their support of terrorist groups is pretty much nothing to speak of compared to 10 years ago (or at least that’s what I gather from years of reading international news sections in newspapers in the past years). Khatami is still subject to the approval of the Mullahs in what he does, but he has phenomenal public support. I hate to say it, but Iran might be our best friend in the area if bin Laden is the culprit. They have supported Shi’ite forces that fight the Taliban near the Afghan-Iranian border, and bin Laden’s and the Taliban’s brand of Suni fundimentalism is different than Iran’s. You can look at is as a kind of civil war amongst Fundimental Islam, and as we know, civil wars are the nastiest.
So… uh… I think attacking Iran would be stupid and counter-productive.
Because the terrorists all trained for suicide bombing, execution only makes them martyrs for more terrorists. Punishment is not nearly as important as preventing future similar actions.

Back to topic. I don’t think comparing this incident to 1941 is a good comparison. Although the Japanese did attack Pearl Harbour, it was a MILITARY target. What these cowards did was attack civilians. And the Muslims hate everybody that is not a Muslim. They think we are Satan(not Brian the real one).
So what have we done? We have let these muslims come into our country by the groves and now they are in a prime position to destroy us from within. And some of you people are too stupid and liberal to see it.
What do you think this country is going to be like after this cools down? We are going to have so much added security our country is going to look more like a 3rd world country instead of the Bad ass #1 world power we should be.

That’s a really big problem for the Western sense of justice if we are dealing with Islamic terrorists. There is a belief in martyrdom and and a glorious afterlife for those who die in a jihad. So say the US retaliates militarily, what do we get? More martyrs. It’s a vicious cycle, and our dropping bombs would just continue it. The cynic in me says that the only way to stop the cycle is for the “enemy” to run out of martyrs and mourners, but that just depresses the hell out of me.
