Time Zone In The Poles

Since we all know that the timezones all intersect at the north and south pole. In which timezone are the poles in?

CHOW

Of course they are not technicaly in any time zone. However, according to this site, South Pole Station (Amundsen-Scott) uses Greenwich Mean Time +12 hr.

As there is no land and hence no base at the North Pole a visitor would presumably either use GMT or the time zone from which he or she approached.

… and I believe the reason that the South Pole uses UTC+12 is that almost all of the flights that go there go through New Zealand, so it’s the most convenient. (I could be misremembering this, though.

Time zones have no physical existence, but are means of matching clock time to “real time” as defined by local sunrise and sunset. It would be truly inconvenient to New Zealanders if on the solstices the sun rose at 6:00 PM and set at 6:00 AM – which is what it does there if your reference is GMT/Zulu.

Accordingly, while mapmakers will show the time zones extending to the poles along 30-degree lines, the only legal definition of a time zone is political – the reason why they skew all over the map from the precise 30-degree setting along national and interior boundaries. The High Seas have no time zones – the only time zones valid over water are defining the territorial seas of a country as having the time zone of that country’s islands or coasts. And Antarctica, where all national claims are in abeyance, is without legal power to define its own time zones; only the individual research stations and such located there will have that authority, and only as it affects themselves.

Ergo – scientists on the Arctic Ocean ice and people in Antarctica for whatever reason will use whatever is most convenient or laid down by their nation of origin as the time they will observe.

And, of course midnight on December 24-25 at the North Pole is held to last for 24 hours, by time-immemoral custom related to gift-delivery logistics!

That they are coordinating with New Zealand time is also suggested by the fact that they go on and off Daylight Saving Time at the same time as NZ. Of course, Daylight Saving Time doesn’t make any sense where each day and night is six months long.

[nitpick]

That should be 15 degrees. (360/24)

(As a handy (almost related) tip, it’s interresting to note that the angular distance between thumb and little finger when extracted at full arms length is about 15degrees. Why is this usefull? Because that is how far the sun will (appear to) move in an hour.)
