Tipping in the Age of COVID-19

I have made it a point to give my delivery people large tips. I count on this lifeline to receive food and other things, and I know that grocery workers, warehouse workers, restaurant workers, and delivery workers are on the low end of the payscale.

What about the rest of you? Are you doing anything to help out those who are helping us?

I double any tip. If I were in a place like NYC, I would do more.

However, I want to add, I am very fortunate, I can afford to do so. Not everyone can.

Some of us aren’t going to be able to pay our rent. Just continuing to order, even without any additional tip, is keeping someone employed. Which is a good thing.

I think in a time like this we need to help out more, but you have to do your best, and don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed if you can’t do anymore.

I have been getting cash from the bank. Gloved. Then I pay for most everything in cash and tell whomever to keep the change. (if it’s a decent amt.) Most people take it. Some have had to ask a manager if it’s OK. And it has been. Except Wally World. The manager said nope, can’t do it.

Since uber is pretty much dead right now I signed up for instacart.

It is raining money in there. I got 2 deliveries with a $75 and $35 tip. The other 3 were at least 10 for a $260 total payout today

ATMs around here only give out $20 bills and I am running out of smaller bills to tip with.

I have been tipping with $20 bills. I can afford it and carry a couple hundred dollars worth in my wallet. I don’t have much occasion to tip, but when I do I decided that given my economic condition, it’s pretty silly for me to not be generous in these times. Last weekend we picked up a pie (takeout only service) from the pizza place we’ve gone to for a decade. The tip was the same price as the pie. “Are you sure you don’t want change?” And I simply said “thanks for being open.”

If you can, consider being extra-generous in these times.

I’m Australian and tipping is the exception rather than the norm here. But now I’m tipping like a muthafucka hoping that take-away deliveries and some personal service providers continue.

My food orders tend to be close to $10 and I pay with a $20. Not sure how that’s going to scale up but I figure anyone getting a tip that doesn’t need it will know someone who does.

I would like to tip, but I don’t have anything smaller than a 20. If my local bank is open maybe I’ll try getting a roll or two of twonies. You are all right; these delivery people all deserve hazardous duty pay.

I have a general rule that tips for deliveries should only exceed $5 in rare cases (like the delivery is so big that they have to make a special trip just for me).
I believe paying more than that is unjustified under normal circumstances, especially if there is a delivery charge.

This entire coronavirus affair is a rare case. I have suspended my tipping limit for the duration.

We’re tipping as much as we can. I got lunch for us the other day at a favorite restaurnat; the bill was 32ish. I had two fifty dollar bills. Glad I checked, because I swiped them from my husband’s wallet and thought I’d taken two twenties. And was gonna say “keep the change”. Which would have been overly generous even for me. I did have them keep the change from the 50.

Ditto the other day when I picked up a couple of pizzas - it was about 40 dollars and change and I had them keep the change. Hopefully the cashier shared the proceeds.

I added 20 to our latest grocery delivery credit card charge when I placed the order; I also left 20 for the delivery guy when he put the bags in the garage. A friend thinks that was enough… now I wish I’d left another 20.

While cash is a bit tight for us, that’s for reasons unrelated to the shutdown (we are both able to work remotely). Like others say, these people are our lifelines and I want to help any way I can.

I’m tipping large, although I haven’t set a specific amount. I’m buying gift cards from local small businesses that I plan on redeeming in 3 months. Although I’m probably not going to get a relief check, I’ve set that amount aside for the purpose. I’ve taken steps to contribute my professional skills, but we haven’t been hit hard enough locally to need that, yet.

I’m also open to suggestions…

I haven’t really gotten any food deliveries but the couple pickups I’ve done I tipped $5 (much more than 20%)

I’ve watched a couple of DJ sets on Twitch from a local DJ. I sent him $10/set tips via Venmo, as he asked.

I have had a couple of virtual tai chi classes, which normally are free from my rec center. I sent the instructor $10 per class.

Someone set up a site for the Cleveland area called clevelandtips.com where area bartenders and servers can post their PayPal/Venmo info and people can leave them tips. I usually go to trivia at a local bar and tip $5 even though I just drink pop, so I sent my bartender $10.

The local free newspaper set up a tip jar for themselves. I sent them $10.

My PayPal account is flush right now so I’m spreading the love as best I can.

Regular tip (or required tip - some places are putting a required tip on orders) on the card; added cash on the porch with a thank you post-it.

The drive-through cashier this morning was giving change with the coins wrapped in the bills and both wrapped in the receipt. It’s the first time I’ve seen that, but I approve.
