Tipping the moving men

We’ve just moved house and had moving men in to do the, er, moving. Do these guys normally get a tip? If so, how much?

I assume they normally get tipped.

I tipped the guys who handled our move, taking into account the number of guys and the amount of work that had to be done. Packing stuff up took longer than unloading it, so the guys who packed our stuff got more. On the other hand, there were more guys for the packing (5 or 6) than there were for the unloading (2), which meant less work for each guy. I ended up giving the packing guys ~$10 each and the unloaders ~$20 each. I tend towards generous tipping, but I felt those guys earned it. We have a lot of crap.

We had three moving guys, and when they were done they got a smallish tip (I think we did maybe $10 apiece) and six-pack of their favorite beer each.

I don’t think they should get tipped at all although this is influenced by the fact that moving men have stolen small items or mishandled some furniture when moving my family’s stuff.

Also, they have said things in spanish about our stuff. Too bad for them that I understood every single thing they said about me.

I had a crew of 4 do the loading, hauling and unloading over a 2 day span. I kept them fed and unthirsty all day, which really helped they’re level of care in handling my stuff. Then tipped them $50 each. Since my company paid for the move, I could afford a really generous tip.

Also, I tipped as soon as the truck was empty, and they stayed around to hook up the washer & dryer, install satelite dish on roof, and other extras.

xizor,

Wow. Sounds like you had a great moving company…

I hope my next experience is that good…

Yes, I would do the same thing: food and soda for the moving people.

I tipped the crew both times I moved. The first time the guys did a great job and I tipped three guys $20. The second time they did a much less good job andf I tipped three guys $20 each.

I’m a dumbass but I was making more money at the time and felt I didn’t want to get my ass kicked by a bunch of guys who carry heavy things for a living. I was a little irritated with their handling of the move and I should have called about it, but I’m a wimp about such things.

Bottom line, yes, tip. $10 - 20 each would be good if you’re happy with it all.

Sorry, I thought you said “tripping the moving men.”

I was going to say, “Sure, it’s fun, but make sure they’re not carrying anything expensive at the time.”

Looks like my $40 per mover was pretty good. OTOH, they did pick stuff from a pickup we were using. That, plus the walk of death from the old apartment to the parking lot.
It would have been a bigger tip, but one of the guys picked up our three-seat sofa by himself and refused to break sweat

As someone who has occasionally helped my brother (who is a driver for Bekins) move furniture on extremely hot summer days, YES, a $20 tip is extremely gratifying. Also, offering to pick up lunch for us and having cold beverages available (even if it is water) is appreciated as well.
